Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOSEPH ZUBACZ Joseph Zubacz was born October 26, 1926 in Brody, Ukraine, and passed away suddenly on January 16, 2010 in Winnipeg. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Rose (Zarowny); daughter Dr. Donna (Jim) Goodridge; son Rev. Dr. Gregory (Melita) Zubacz and granddaughters, Sofia, Helena, and Teresa; many nieces and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. He was predeceased by his parents Ilia and Teklia; sister Maria; brother Julian and sister-in-law Maria. Joseph spent his childhood on the family farm in Berlyn - Brody Ukraine, and attended school in Berlyn. In 1942, he was taken to Germany as a farm labourer. After the war, he drove trucks for the American army, and was later briefly conscripted into the Soviet army. He arrived in Canada at Transcona on October 6, 1948 and worked at various jobs. In 1957, he married his sweetheart Rose, and they embarked on their greatest adventure together when they moved to Calgary, Vancouver, and Jasper, and finally back to Winnipeg in 1962. Joseph started his career with CNR, worked later for the Manitoba Department of Highways, and returned to work at CNR in various capacities until his retirement in 1989 after 38 years of service. Joseph was a longstanding member of St. Michael's Parish in Transcona, and a Charter member of St. Michael's Credit Union where he served on the Board of Directors. He was a dedicated member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. He was elevated to the Knights of St. Volodymyr, and was awarded the Medal of Merit. He was instrumental in the design of the official Brotherhood flag, and he served in various capacities on the National, Archeparchial, and Branch levels. He was a member of the provincial Ukrainian Canadian Committee, and a Charter member of the Bishop Budka Knights of Columbus Council as a 3rd Degree Knight, and the Canon Luhovy Council as a 4th Degree Knight. He served on the Board of Directors of the Osvita Foundation, Progress News, the Taras Shevchenko Foundation, and was instrumental in establishing the Rt. Rev. Mitrat Stefan Semczuk Foundation where he served on the board of directors as President. Joseph always selflessly gave of himself to his family, to the Church, and to the Ukrainian community, and continued giving right up until the time that he reposed in the Lord. He was a man of deep faith and steadfast dedication to God and the works of His Holy Church. His high standards of integrity and diligent effort were evident in everything he did and he will be truly missed by his family and many friends. Prayers will be sung at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Parish, 400 Day St. in Transcona on Thursday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m., and the funeral will be held on Friday, January 22 at 10:00 a.m. with His Grace Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, OSBM officiating. Interment will follow at Transcona Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Huyghe, Walter Kohut, Jake Froese, Russell Turyk, Walter Petryk and Norm Grywinski.
