(ANNIE) MURIEL AIKENHEAD 1916 - 2009 Muriel Aikenhead passed away peacefully at West Park Manor, Winnipeg, on December 30, at age 93. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Aikenhead; her parents, Jim and Ina Bell; and her sister, Irene Struthers Reid. Born October 7, 1916, on the family farm at Greenway, Manitoba, Muriel took her schooling in Baldur and lived there until 1944 when the family moved to Winnipeg. Muriel graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 and married Flight Sergeant Lloyd Aikenhead in December of the same year, just weeks before he was deployed overseas. Sadly, Lloyd did not return from the war. Muriel's 35-year nursing career was spent in Winnipeg -- initially with Drs. Tisdale, Tisdale Whiteford, followed by many years at the former Municipal Hospitals and, finally, with Poseidon Care Centre. Muriel will always be remembered for her resilience, her quiet strength and her fierce independence. Left to mourn her passing are Muriel's son, Larry, and his wife, Judy, of Calgary. A memorial service to honour Muriel will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Saviour's Anglican Church, 690 Munroe Avenue, Winnipeg.
