DANIEL GIEST With extreme sadness we announce the passing of Daniel Giest on Thursday, January 28 2010 at Deer Lodge Centre with family by his side. Dad was born in Rhine, SK in 1921 to Jacob and Amelia Giest, he was the first of five children. He grew up in a rural farming community working hard with family and neighbours. In 1942 he trained with the Canadian Forces in Ontario after which he drove a streetcar in Toronto for a short time. He decided to return to Saskatchewan where he married Erna Kitsch in 1944. After farming in a few locations he decided to move to Winnipeg in 1956 where he began employment at Ashdowns Warehouse. Yard care and tending to flower gardens at MacFarlane's home along the river was one of his greatest passions. They started a home in St. Charles and Dad soon started with the St. James School Division. During this time he made many lifelong friends. Dad retired from the school division in 1984 and concentrated on his love for fishing, spending weeks at a time at Nutimik Lake wrestling with many a sturgeon. Dad valued the many friends he and Mom met through his work, St. James Lutheran Church and their many adventures in fishing and hunting with St. Joe's Wildlife. In 2005 Dad moved to Deer Lodge Centre to be closer to Mom. We are all very grateful for the capable and caring staff at Deer Lodge. Dad's struggle with Parkinson's lead to a decline in health in the last few months. Dad was predeceased by daughter Donna, his parents and brother Jack. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Erna of 65 years; sister Mary; brothers, Eric (Arlene) and Archie (Jean); children, Larry (Judy), Ray (Betty), Debbie Wall, Dennis, Teresa (Stuart Jackson), eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many family and friends. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 3 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with a viewing one half hour prior and an interment and reception to follow. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
