DOROTHY MARIE LAW Peacefully, on Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, our mother, Dorothy Law, passed into a new world where we are sure she has gone for a long walk enjoying all the new sights and sounds around her. Predeceased by her husband of 60 years, William Richmond, she will again be with him, along with his sister, Norma Richmond Law, and their parents, William Albert Law and Annie Law (nee Richmond). Her sorrow of losing her mother, Mabel Horberg (nee Anderson) so early in her life will disappear when they meet again. She will meet her brother Robert Horberg and they will be laughing and joking around as much as before. Unbelievably, she was joined by her daughter-in-law, Gisele Law, four hours later. One can picture them entering heaven hand in hand, giving each other strength. Mom was born November 25, 1917 in Minneapolis, MN. Her early years, with her two brothers, Robert and Richard Horberg were not easy. Sent to Winnipeg to live with her aunt and uncle, Henry and Phoebe Johnston, Dorothy was raised on Waterloo Street, in River Heights, and attended Kelvin High School. A real tom boy Dorothy excelled at sports and figured she would be a tennis star. It is here at Kelvin, where she met her lifelong friend Catherine Baldner (nee Woods) and eventually her future husband, William Richmond Law. After marriage, her first born was William Henry Law, and like all first borns he was a handful! Unlike Robert Richard Law, the second born, who learned quite quickly, never do what your brother did! Dorothy raised two young boys as Dad travelled extensively throughout western Canada (planes, trains and automobile) as a footwear representative and he was away from home eight to 10 weeks each spring and fall season. Due to this, she became a PAWN of two growing sons! How many times did she get mad at them and then walk away laughing and shouting out I'M MAD ! Her sons' friends said I wish my mother was like yours. She's really neat! Little did they know when the sons were really young, Dorothy would chuck them outside to play in the middle of winter! No wonder they still enjoy the great outdoors. The boys kept Dorothy's hands full in the days on Assiniboine Ave. Dorothy kept active with curling at Deer Lodge, long walks down Assiniboine Avenue to Bourkevale Park and enjoying the outdoors at the Big Whiteshell cabin. The outdoors and nature is where she found strength and solace. She loved the times in Sioux Narrows, summer and winter, and through the close friendship of Harold and Catherine Baldner, she and Dad spent winters in Hawaii for many years and then finally Florida. As the lake life became too physically demanding and concerned for their health, Dorothy and Bill moved back to Winnipeg, enjoying years at Kiltarton Towers, especially the balcony view south over the Assiniboine River. Her love of the outdoors had Dorothy walking well into her 80s. Walks to downtown from the Kiltarton, and along Wellington Cres. to Assiniboine Park kept her heart big and strong. After Dad's passing in 2002, Dorothy eventually moved into The Westhaven, where her fun side endeared her to so many. Everyone loved Dorothy. She enjoyed the balcony overlooking Sturgeon Creek and all the action on Portage Ave. and around the Victoria Hospital. Dorothy and Catherine Baldner were reunited at The Westhaven, but she became very despondent after Catherine's passing, until being admitted to The Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. Again, Dorothy's joking around endeared her to all the staff, who were very saddened by her passing, but grateful for having known her. High Fives to the Middlechurch Home staff for keeping Dorothy so comfortable in her final days. Dorothy is survived by her brother in Minneapolis, Richard (Julie) Horberg, her sister-in-law, Nancy Horberg, her sons, William H. Law (Donna Patola) and Robert R. Law (Gisele) and her two granddogs , Karlie and Spencer. Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held at Brookside Cemetery. If friends wish, donations may be made in Dorothy's honour to her favourite charity, The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. SEE YA' MA!!!!! NEIL BARDAL INC.
