JAMES E. BENNETT It is with great sadness that the family of James E. Bennett announces his death on February 8, 2010. James emigrated from Scotland to Winnipeg in 1952, the day after his wedding (strictly coincidental he said), to help set up a new Cobalt unit at the Cancer Institute (now CancerCare Manitoba). He worked tirelessly with his friend Dick Walton to build a strong, patient oriented service under the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, forgoing any administrative work and promotions so as to remain working directly with his patients. His work in Manitoba was interrupted by a year in Burma on loan to set up a Cobalt cancer treatment centre, and at various other times by shorter duration stays in Korea and Japan. After 33 years with the Foundation he retired to a quiet life with his wife Mary, growing his favourite roses, tending a large garden and occasionally vexing his wife. His passions were varied, including stamp collecting, carpentry, computers and the occasional letter to the editor when he felt the world needed direction. James is survived by his wife of 58 years, Josephine Mary (nee Ball); his six children, Elisabeth, Peter (Sheila), Patricia (Nazir), Timothy (Laura), Nicholas (Lori), and Charles; nine grandchildren, James, Joan, Esa, Ilyas, Jenna, Sara, Joseph, Alexandra and Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd., at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13 with Msgr. Maurice Comeault, P.H. officiating. Reception to be held in the church basement after entombment in Assumption Garden Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, should they so wish, friends are invited to contribute to CancerCare Manitoba or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in James' name. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
