DONALD STAPLES GRANT It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that the Grant family announces the passing of Donald Staples Grant on February 5, 2010. He was a caring and compassionate husband to wife Jean. He was a loving, encouraging, wonderful father and friend to daughters Barbara, Karen, Jennifer Moira and Fiona. Words cannot express how much he will be missed by his family. He will also be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues and students. As a professor of mathematics for 43 years at the University of Winnipeg he brought a passion for mathematics and was dedicated to his students. He had many stories about mathematics and mathematicians that were entertaining whether one had math knowledge or not. He was an avid reader with an interest in a wide variety of books that he generously shared with others. Even with cancer he continued to live his life with an amazing, quiet strength and thought more of others than himself. We love you Dad. You will always be in our hearts and our minds and our memories. Cremation has taken place and at his request there will be no funeral. Flowers are gratefully declined.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Prof. Grant taught me abstract algebra (group, ring and field theory) in the '70s. I had a problem with cyclic subgroups and asked Prof. Grant for his help after class. He said he would look at the problem and let me know what he thought the next day but opined that the problem was likely trivial. The next day, as he was running off after class, he commented to me over his shoulder: "Phillip, I was right. The problem is trivial." I was a little upset, but after the last class that week, he asked me to stay behind. He patiently showed me the solution and graciously helped me work through it and, as it turns out, the problem was trivial! I miss Prof. Grant and think of him often. (I also miss Prof. Crawford Campbell and Prof. Ken Armstrong.) - Posted by: Phillip Cramer (student) on: Jan 11, 2022

  • I was a student of Prof. Grant What a wit and a beautiful mind. Some people you just don't forget, he was one of them His personality could fill a room. - Posted by: Chris Schulz (student) on: Jun 01, 2013

  • I was fortunate enough to have taken a Calculus course taught by professor Grant back in 1995. I still recall that course fondly. In particular, I recall one lecture that deviated into a strange lesson in Greek literature. Anyway, just for kicks I Googled professor Grant and was so disappointed to see this obituary pop up. He was a legend! - Posted by: Mike Phelan (Former undergraduate student ) on: Apr 26, 2013

  • What is death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind, because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you for an interval somewhere very near, just around the corner... All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again! - Posted by: Randall Grant (nephew) on: Feb 11, 2013

  • It's been over two years since you passed, but I still remember vividly the great evenings that me, you and Jennifer Moira shared at Tony Roma's on Friday nights. I only knew you for a few years but after awhile you were like an old friend who made all around you feel at ease and you always had engaging and scintillating stories and anecdotes to share. It was always nice to see you interacting with Jennifer Moira and your students who absolutely adored you. I was fortunate and honored to have made your acquaintance, good sir. You are very much missed. - Posted by: Brian Wood (Friend) on: Mar 13, 2012
