HERBERT WESLEY LAWRENCE 1913 - 2010 It is with great sadness that the family of Herb Lawrence announces his peaceful passing on February 11, 2010 at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 96 years. Herb will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Paul Lawrence (Eva) of Calgary and Heather Milan (Bob) of Winnipeg; grandson Kelly Milan (Sharon) of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren Lauren, Heather and Bryan Milan and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by Connie, his loving wife of 67 years, in 2006, his son Brock, his brother Charlie Lawrence and his sister Ethel Lawrence. Herb was born on September 20, 1913 in Wawanesa, MB to parents, Alice and Fred Lawrence. He was educated in Wawanesa and started work in 1934 with the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. He worked his way from Office Boy to Regional Manager and retired after 44 years of dedicated service. He met Connie, the love of his life, at the Mutual , married in 1939 and they made Wawanesa their home until 1998 when they moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their family. They always said they had a wonderful life together and were very thankful for it. In addition to his commitment to family and work, Herb was a strong community leader in Wawanesa, the United Church and the Boy Scouts. He served as a town councillor and the Mayor. He was a Masonic Lodge member for 65 years. He served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force, trained as an aerial photographer and was posted to England until 1946. He applied his skill and love of photography throughout his life recording family and town events, nature and extensive travels with Connie. He also enjoyed many other activities over the years - his ham radio hobby, golfing, gardening, hunting, fishing, boating, the cottage at Balmy Beach on Pelican Lake, retirement winters in Yuma and generally marveling at all the wonders of nature. Herb will be remembered for his positive attitude, zest for life, quiet, kind, friendly nature and especially his unique and jolly laugh; most of all for his constant, unqualified love and support for his family. Thanks to the staff at Fred Douglas Lodge, especially on the Evergreen Unit, and the staff on Unit 5 at Seven Oaks General Hospital for all their kindness and care of Herb. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and interment in Wawanesa will be planned for this summer. An announcement will be made. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Wawanesa United Church, Wawanesa, MB., R0K 2G0; The Fred Douglas Society Foundation, 1275 Burrows Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0B8, or to a charity of choice in Herb's memory.
