Born: Jul 29, 1911
Date of Passing: Feb 17, 2010
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNETTIE BALZER July 29, 1911 - February 17, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sister Nettie of Donwood Manor at the age of 98 years. Remaining to forever cherish her memory are her sisters, Helena (Lena) and Tina (Kay); sister-in-law Mary, four nephews, three nieces and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Nettie was born to Anna and David Balzer in Nordheim, Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada in 1926 together with her parents and six siblings. Just months later our father passed away, so Nettie and both brothers went to work as farm help. Nettie worked as a domestic for the A.A. Kroeker family for 10 years and in her free time completed a four-year course at Winkler Bible School. In 1936 our family moved to Winnipeg for better job opportunities. Nettie worked for Redekopp Lumber for 38 years as Manager of the Dry Goods Department. She joyfully served in our church as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years, and also sang in the church choir. Her life was a life of service to others. Nettie loved travelling, reading and music, all of which she enjoyed until age 92 when her health took a turn for the worse. After a lengthy hospital stay, she settled in Donwood Personal Care Home, where she spent the last five years. We want to thank the nurses and staff on 2 South for their loving care and compassion, especially Jane and Mary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Donwood Manor at the service or to 171 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2G 0V9. The funeral service will be held Monday, February 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Rd., with interment to follow. Viewing will take place prior to the service. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. 2. Tante Nettie was my sunday school teacher when I was 3 or 4 years old. But who at north kildonan mb did not have her as a sunday school teacher. With 60 yrs of service she taught generations of us. I loved how she loved us. Always smiling and laughing. Her laugh had a rich and wonderful ring to it. I recall how wonderful she made the church Christmas program each year by having all the little kids sing their songs. I saw her apartment in Donwood manor - where she still displayed with pride her work achievements with the Redekopp family. What a Godly woman and dear sister in the Lord. She is still loved and missed. - Posted by: Hans E. Boge (student) on: Aug 19, 2015
