JOHN PHILLIP SCHMIDT It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather on February 23, 2010 at the Gimli Betel Home. John was predeceased by his wife Edith of 60 plus years. He leaves to mourn his sons Ronald (Carol) and Lawrence (Lorraine); five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Helen as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was born in Berlo, Manitoba on February 17, 1912. Growing up he was an altar boy at St. Benedict's Church in Camp Morton. He later worked at the Selkirk Lumber Company in Winnipeg Beach as a carpenter. Dad was never idle, always working side jobs and doing what he could to support his family, even if it meant working seven days a week. He loved hunting, trapping and fishing, and later in life his many trips through the Rockies to the west coast to visit family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli. Interment will follow in the Winnipeg Beach Community Cemetery. The family would like to thank to Gimli Betel Home. Dad had nothing but good things to say about the staff and the care he received at Betel Home and a special thank you to Dr. R.C. Patel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gimli Betel home Foundation would be appreciated. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
