DONALD EVAN MORGAN November 1, 1931 - February 28, 2010 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Don Morgan announce his passing on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Don died peacefully with his family by his side at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg after a brief and valiant battle with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Don was very recently predeceased by his wife, Mary Morgan, and predeceased by his parents, and his brother Arthur Morgan. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Laurie Morgan (Willi Ahrens), Barbara Pooley (Bill), Don R. Morgan (Karen), his grand-daughters, Robyn and Paige Pooley, his sister Vicki (Stan Johnson), his brother Gordon Morgan (Audrey), and sister-in-law Shirley Morgan, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. Don was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario on November 1, 1931, the son of Evan Wales Morgan and Josephine Morgan, (nee Johnston), the third of four children. Don's early years were spent in Hudson, Ontario and he continued to thrive in Winnipeg where his family moved the year he turned 13. Don lived a childhood full of mischief and adventures. His sense of adventure continued throughout his life with a love of travel and he told wonderful stories of the many trips and of the people that he and Mary had encountered over the years. Always enterprising, Don started working as a young boy delivering telegrams in Winnipeg by bicycle. He met the love of his life, Mary MacAulay, at the Home Street United Church young people's group. He and Mary married on July 17, 1953 and they began their family life in Winnipeg. As a young married man, Don worked in the shops of the CN Transcona Yards as a machinist and welder until he and Mary decided to raise their family in Dauphin, where he ran his own business for several years before attending at Red River Community College to attain his teacher's certificate. During his long teaching career at the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School, he truly enjoyed the young people he taught, always seeing the best in everyone. As part of his own lifelong learning he received his Bachelor of General Studies degree through dedication and hard work. He was an active member of his community and held long relationships with the square dancing, curling and the K-40 clubs. He enjoyed many long and lasting friendships throughout his life. Although faced with tremendous health adversities and personal sorrow this past year, Don strove to remain optimistic and cheerful. He enjoyed his morning coffee pals, his weekly bridge games, and he learned to text on his cell phone to keep in close contact with his granddaughters. He was looking forward to summer and getting back to Clear Lake. A great family man, Don was a devoted husband, a generous and loving father, and Poppa completely adored his granddaughters. Don's family would like to truly thank all the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists at the Dauphin hospital and the MICU at the Health Sciences Centre for their efforts, expertise, care and compassion. Memorial service and celebration of Don's life will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dauphin First United Church, 37 3rd Ave. N.W., Dauphin, Manitoba. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or to a charity of one's choice.
