GERALD (GERRY) JOSEPH GAUTHIER It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gerry, at the Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, MB, at the age of 83 on March 12, 2010. Gerry's memory will be lovingly cherished by his partner and friend Penny Kis, of 18 years, his five children - Gary (Lilianne), Ilene (Ed), Ray (Brenda), Bob (Mae) and Tammy; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren - Sandie (Tyrone) and sons Tyler and Trey; J.R. (Scott) and daughters Caitlyn and Piper; Jeremy (Lara) and son Dylan; Justin; Alanna (John) and son Ethan; Vanessa (David) and daughter Katia; Sherissa (Deon) and Brandon. He is survived by his brother, Leonard (Lorraine) and sisters Evelyn (Marcel) Saindon and Romea Nielsen; and the Bertrand family. He was predeceased by his wife Antonia Gauthier (nee Bertrand) of 40 years. Dad was born September 1, 1926 in Ross, MB to Romeo and Irene Gauthier (nee Rivard). Throughout his life, dad was a heavy equipment operator. He married mom on September 15, 1951. After moving to Alberta, they settled in Ross to build their home and together operate a small hobby farm. In 1977 they went on to build a laundromat and dry cleaning business in Ste. Anne. Dad retired at the age of 63 to care for mom and after her passing on May 3, 1991, he spent many years travelling in his motor home. Dad had a great love of music at an early age and played many instruments including guitar, violin, organ, accordion and harmonica. He enjoyed singing his favourite songs and will be remembered whistling while he worked. As a child he built model airplanes and a snow plane at the age of 21. His passion for flying led him to obtaining his pilot's licence in his 30s where he flew well into his 70s. To this day, dad continued flying with his pilot son Gary and would fly annually to visit his hometown of Ross. Dad was also a creative man who loved working with his hands and excelled in carpentry. He built his own homes and helped us when building ours. Dad was very devoted to his family and lived in Steinbach for his remaining 13 years spending a lot of time with all of us. He was a very friendly and social man, always smiling and had many friends with whom he enjoyed discussing current events at the various coffee shops. Thank you to the Bethesda Hospital for the care given to dad during his brief stay. In keeping with Gerald's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or Lung Association Manitoba, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6. We love you dad and will miss you. Rest in peace as you continue flying amongst the clouds. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald St. 253-5086
