WILMA JEAN FRIESEN (nee HICKMAN) September 16, 1934 - March 15, 2010 It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Wilma Friesen, surrounded by her family, on Monday, March 15, 2010. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 51 years, Len; her children and cherished grandchildren, Bill and Justin; Wendy, Carl, Braedon and Riley; her sisters and brother, Ruth, Marlene, Mary, Wallace and their families; as well as special cousins and many good friends. She was predeceased by her parents William and Jane Hickman. Although a city girl at heart, Mom grew up on a farm in Birch Bay. She was the second daughter born to her parents, but because her father had been expecting a boy, she was given the nickname Billy , which stuck with her until she moved to Winnipeg as a young adult. In later years, she came to appreciate the nickname as a term of endearment from her father who only called her Wilma once in her lifetime, just before he passed away. It was at a Winnipeg dance that she met her future husband, Len. Going to dances on the weekend was a popular pastime in the 1950s. When relaying stories of her youth, Mom often said, I would only go out a second time with a boy if he was a good dancer. Mom and Dad's dance lasted almost 52 years. Mom loved being with her family more than anything. Raising her two children and then watching her three grandsons grow was her greatest joy. She spoke fondly of the special qualities of each grandson and she loved each one dearly. They loved her back just as much and will miss her greatly. Mom had a strong faith in the Lord and carried herself with strength and dignity until the end. She was the most caring, compassionate, and generous person and she will be missed more than words can express. Interment will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19 at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at East Kildonan Baptist Church, 700 Watt St. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba in memory of Wilma Friesen.
