WALTER DEMCHUK April 28, 1918 - March 30, 2010 Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn's rain. With deep sadness, we announce Walter's passing at Riverview Health Centre, with family at his side. Dearly loved father and grandfather (Gido and Papa) of Garry, Daniel and Jordan Demchuk, Darlene and Joel Sheinfield, Jeremy and Chigusa Gunness, Catherine and Rick Westerberg, Carol, Tom and Joshua Van Alstyne, Lorrie, Ray, Ben and Brenden Bradbury and Michelle, Roger, Kyle, Morgan and Taylor Wabick. Walter is predeceased by his wife Gloria, infant daughter Monica and siblings, Joseph, John, Emily, Annie, Margaret, Michael, Anne, Eugene and Elsie. He is survived by brothers, Danny and Paul. Walter was born in Arran, Saskatchewan to parents (Catherine and Fred Demczuk), who emigrated from the Ukraine. He married Gloria, the love of his life, in 1945 and spent the early years of their marriage in Arran. In 1952, they moved to Rackham, Manitoba where Walter managed the Canadian Consolidated Grain elevator. In 1964, they moved to Gilbert Plains, Manitoba where he was a manager for Manitoba Pool Elevators, retiring in 1982 after a fulfilling 38 years in the grain industry. From 1992, they resided in Winnipeg. Walter was a hard working, generous and sociable man who valued family and friends. He loved a house full of visitors and lived by the motto eat, drink and be merry . His outgoing nature made it easy for him to strike up a conversation with strangers and he proudly spoke about his children and grandchildren. Although Parkinson's disease robbed his ability to speak in recent years, he enjoyed just hanging out with his buddies at Zeller's coffee shop. Throughout his life, Walter had many interests including restoring old vehicles, refinishing furniture, picking mushrooms and berries, tending his vegetable garden and taking long drives in the country to check local crops. He also took pleasure in his activities as an honourary member of the Knights of Columbus. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Unit D1, Riverview Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery and reception at Glen Eden Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba. Though they may pass from this earth, those we have loved remain in our hearts forever. Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
