JOEL BARTON MOORE Peacefully, at home, after a long and courageous battle with melanoma, Joel Barton Moore passed away on April 24, 2010. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Kathryn (nee Cockerill), his daughter, Allison, his son, Michael, his parents, Alfred and Esther, his sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Mark George-Moore, his brother Rob and sister-in-law Debbie, his brother Grant and sister-in-law Christie, his mother-in-law, Elaine Cockerill and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Scott and Christine Cockerill. Uncle Joe will also be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Andrea and Lisa Norenberg; Lindsay, Nicholas and Jake Moore; Alex and Annika Moore; Scott Douglas, Luke and Claire Cockerill, and his great-nephew, Ryker Sokoliuk. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Claire Cockerill in 2007. Joe also leaves behind a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and many cherished friends. He was proud to have been part of such a large and loving family. Joel was born in Winnipeg on May 19, 1958, to proud parents Alfred and Esther Moore. He was raised and educated in Winnipeg, graduating from Kildonan East High School in 1976. Joel attended the University of Manitoba and graduated from the School of Respiratory Therapy in 1982. Throughout his career as a Respiratory Therapist, he worked at the Victoria General Hospital, Misericordia Health Centre, Med-Care Plus, Medigas and the Health Sciences Centre. He was extremely proud of his position as Regional Manager of WRHA Patient Transport. Joe loved his job and often remarked that he had the best job in the world. He was extremely disappointed when illness ultimately prevented him from continuing on in this position in 2006. He enjoyed his work immensely and made many long lasting friendships with those with whom he worked over the years. Joel met Kathryn in 1979 and they were married in 1986. They joyfully welcomed Allison in 1989 and Michael in 1992. Family was of first and foremost importance to Joe. He was an extremely dedicated and loving husband and father. He supported his family in all their endeavors and was there to either coach or cheer on Allison and Michael in their many different activities. He was their biggest fan and supporter and was so extremely proud of their many academic and athletic accomplishments. Joe loved to travel and travelled extensively with his friends and family. The place he loved best, however, was the cottage at GRAND BEACH. He has spent every summer of his life at the cottage, and was so pleased that he could pass this love of the beach on to Kath, Allison and Michael. To say that Joel loved sports was an understatement! He was a huge fan of the Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He had season tickets to both for many years. He took great interest in following these teams and was a wealth of stats and knowledge. He loved his hockey and football drafts and thoroughly enjoyed talking sports with his friends. Joel also loved to play sports. He played sponge hockey with Apocalypse Now for 23 years. He also played football for the Winnipeg Rods in his younger years. Joel also loved to run. He competed in the first ever Manitoba Marathon in 1979 and continued throughout the years to finish many more full and half marathons in various cities. He loved the Grand Beach Sun Run. He has passed this love of running on to his children and was extremely proud when both Allison and Michael completed the full Manitoba Marathon in 2009. There wasn't a sport that Joe didn't like or that he wouldn't try. He has instilled this love of sports in his children. There are so many people who have supported us throughout this long and trying journey. Our family extends our sincere appreciation to the staff and friends at CancerCare Manitoba, Health Sciences Centre, and the Palliative Care Program for their exceptional care of Joel and our family throughout the past eight years. We are extremely grateful for our large network of friends and family who have been an amazing support system for us throughout this difficult eight-year battle. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in Joel's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. According to Joel's wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at the Sanford Cemetery at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2010, followed by a celebration of a life well lived at 1:00 p.m. at Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive, Winnipeg.
