SOPHIA WASYLIK (GLOSS) Peacefully and in the presence of loved ones, Sophia Wasylik passed away on Friday, April 23, 2010. Sophia will be dearly missed by her four sons Keith (Elaine Andrew), Warren (Deborah Czernecky), Bruce (Catherine MacKenzie) and Tom Haines. She loved her nieces, nephews and adored her grandchildren Kelsi and Tesca Andrew-Wasylik, Meghan Weber and Valerie and Hannah Wasylik. Sophia Gloss was born on April 18, 1920 in Walkleyburg, Manitoba and was predeceased by her husband John and brother Jack Gloss. Mom enjoyed a very special and close relationship with her beloved sister, Anne Prokopow, who resides in Selkirk, Manitoba. Sophia attended Brightstar School and worked on the family farm before leaving home to repair airplanes during the Second World War. She married John Wasylik on August 30, 1947 and they settled in Fort Rouge in the early 1950s. Mom made many life-long friends while living in Lord Roberts and Riverview and quickly established strong connections within the community that lasted to this day. Sophia spent most of her working life in the hospitality industry, not only with companies such as Naleway and Mooney's but also catering private functions and working with a number of local synagogues and congregations included Shaarey Zedek, Talmud Torah and Rosh Pina. She became well known for her artistic fruit platters and creative pastry displays. Between those, her cookies and the best lemon meringue pies on the planet, it is lucky that we were very active as children. Mom spent several years at the end of her career as manager of the Winnipeg Convention Centre Staff Cafeteria. Faith was an integral part of Mom's life as she was actively involved in the Roman and Ukrainian Catholic Churches for over 25 years holding numerous executive positions within the CWL. She loved visiting family and friends, her garden at Riverbend Plaza, good food, reading, music, table games, bowling and volunteering at church and the Riverview Health Centre. Our family would like to thank the dedicated staff at the Sharon Home who cared for and comforted Mom in the final stages of her life. We would especially like to acknowledge the love and attention she received from the nurses and support staff on Weinberg Two. Mom enjoyed her regular visits with Louise Kelso and Ted and MaryAnn Bicknell. We are extremely grateful for their compassion and steadfast support over many years. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 1 at Our Lady of Victory Memorial Parish, 254 Arnold Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sophia's memory can be made to charities that focus on the needs of children or animals such as the Movement Centre of Manitoba, Variety the Children's Charity and Winnipeg Humane Society. Vichnaya PamYat!
