SARA ABRAHAMS December 21, 1920 - April 27, 2010 Sara Abrahams (nee Peters) passed away on April 27, 2010, at Concordia Hospital, with family by her side. She was born December 21, 1920, in the Molotschna Colony, Ukraine, to Johann and Helena Peters. Sara's mother passed away when she was a few months old and was sent to live with relatives until her father could care for her again. While this arrangement was only supposed to be temporary, she was never returned to her family. During the Second World War, Sara travelled with her daughter Elvira, aunt, cousin and hundreds of other Mennonite refuges from the Ukraine to Berlin. After the Second World War they were trapped in Berlin, but through a miracle from God and the help of MCC they were put on a train from Berlin to Bremer Hafen. From there, they boarded a Dutch ship called the Volendam, which took them to a refuge tent camp in Argentina. Once the revolution in Paraguay was over they were moved to Volendam Colony. There she met Kornelius Abrahams and on June 19, 1949 they married. They cleared the jungle, built a home, and worked the land in Paraguay with their eight children. On November 1, 1960 they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sara and Kornelius were ordained as deacons in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Volendam, Paraguay. They continued to serve as deacons and in various other areas in the Elmwood MB church in Winnipeg. Sara loved music, baking, gardening, crocheting, sewing blankets for MCC, and reading. She was a loving and caring mother and would work tirelessly sewing clothes and cooking for her family. Her faith and sense of humour gave her a bright outlook on life and endeared her to many. She will be deeply missed by her children Elvira (Martin) Sudfeld, Maggie (Gerhart) Kramer, Anna (John) Pauls, Harry (Catherine), Martha Greenwood, Luise, Beate Abrahams-Bolen (Lionel Dupuis), and Ruth Kroker, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sara was predeceased by her husband Kornelius, daughter Kaethe, granddaughter Rebecca, parents and siblings. Thank you Lynn, Monica, Val, Stefanie, Nicole, and Myrtle for your care and generosity of spirit towards Sara. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg. Viewing will be held prior to the service. Interment will take place at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens following the service. Donations may be made to the Family Life Network.
