Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALLAN WILLIAM GEORGE MCCAIG It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Allan McCaig on May 1, 2010. Dad is survived by his very special friend, Marie Rudnicki; his children, Lynn (Ross) Noble, Janis (Mike) Szyszkowski, John (Caroline) McCaig and Debbie (Ken) MacLeod; his grandchildren, Shannon (Jason) Shenher, Shauna Noble, David (Jaime) Szyszkowski, Brenda Szyszkowski, Laurie (Grant) Kennedy and great-grandchildren, Samuel Noble, Ava, Lilly and Zachary Shenher, Luke Szyszkowski, and Moira, Teryl and Katie Kennedy, and his sister Jean Sauter Allan was born January 29, 1923 in Edmonton Alberta to William John McCaig and Tina Friesen. He was raised by his mother, Tina in Saskatchewan along with his siblings, Doris, Jean, Lorne and Ethel. At 11 years of age, he went to live with his Grandmother, Henrietta Koehler, to help with the farm. Allan joined the army in 1942 where he served with the 19th Field Regiment RCA 55th Battery in France, Belgium, Germany, Holland and England. He met his future wife, Eileen, while on leave in London. They were married at the end of the war and settled in Winnipeg to raise their family. Allan was employed with Anthes Foundry as a steelworker for 43 years, until his retirement in 1988. He had served as the local union representative for many of those years. Dad was an early member of the newly founded C.C.F. Party and remained a supporter of the NDP for the rest of his life. Dad was a lifelong bowler, but also enjoyed baseball and curling. In later years, he took up fishing and boating and enjoyed many years at the Big Whiteshell and then at Selkirk on the Red River with his good friends, George and Vi Smith. When we were young, we thought our Dad was the strongest man in the world and he proved it throughout his life, working at a very tough job to support his family and then meeting the many physical challenges he faced in the last 20 years of his life. With the help of his devoted friend, Marie, he was able to live a full and active life for many years. Marie has been a blessing to us all and we thank her again for all that she has done. Funeral service to be held Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day Street. Interment to follow at the Field of Honour for the First World War and Second World War veterans at the Transcona Cemetery. If friends so wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
