OLLIE ZUBRICKI After a lengthy illness it is with regret that we announce the death of Ollie Zubricki (Yarema), on Sunday, May 2, 2010, in the Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface General Hospital, at the age of 84 years. Remaining to forever cherish Ollie's memory are her sister Betty; brother-in-law Julius; sister Rose; sister-in-law Sylvia; numerous nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Annie Yarema; stepfather Phillip Mochnal; husband Ed; sisters Effie, Marion, Pauline, Verna and little Stella; brothers Steve and Ernie. Born March 21, 1926 in Sifton, Manitoba, Ollie left the farm as a very young woman to the big city of Winnipeg. With a strong work ethic and tireless energy, Ollie enjoyed a 27-year career at Jacob Fashion Tan Jay (Nygard) and then continued working, this time for herself, as a business owner. She first entered the food industry with her older sister Effie and soon after, opened up her own restaurant on Notre Dame. Interacting with the public continued when she purchased the Lake Haven Motel in Grand Marais, which she operated with Ed until his sudden passing. Early retirement at 52 years of age allowed Ollie to enjoy her many hobbies and activities. Active in the Church, she enjoyed the fellowship of church activities and was especially proud of her involvement with the choir. She was also involved with the Canadian Polish Athletic Club and volunteered her time at Bingos and fundraising events. Ollie enjoyed golfing and bowling, both of which she greatly missed when she badly injured her ankle and was forced to give up those activities. Determined to maintain her social life, she took up cards and enjoyed her Wednesday card games. Ollie loved to travel. Her vacations included trips to Hawaii, Cuba, Florida and Europe, as well, as car trips to visit family in BC. She loved driving her car and would often hop in the car and head to Sifton to visit her brother Ernie and family at the farm. Although Ollie struggled with her health for the last few years, she continued to maintain her independence and remained in her apartment until her hospital admission. Knitting and cooking occupied her time, as well as her balcony garden of tomatoes and geraniums. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., in the St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street. Interment will take place in Sifton, Manitoba. The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital for the special care they provided to Ollie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ollie's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
