Bill was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Gytha (nee Gudmundsson), brother Terence Kenifick, brothers-in-law Maurice Lannoo, Ted Groff, sister-in-law Lena Kenifick and father-in-law Robert Lytle. Bill was born in Winnipeg on June 3, 1948. He lived most of his life in Charleswood. Bill and Debbie married in 1979. They loved to entertain family and friends in their home. They also enjoyed travelling. They seldom missed their Friday night movie dates. Bill was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a caring and generous man whose unconditional love will be forever cherished. Bill was an accomplished athlete who excelled in many school and community sports. Baseball, hockey and curling were his favourites. In his late teens, he coached little league baseball. He was a passionate sports fan of the New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens and of course the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Jets and Goldeyes. Bill also loved horse racing and could occasionally be found at Assiniboia Downs. Bill is a past president of the Charleswood Curling Club and a member of the Charleswood Historical Society. Bill's entrepreneurial skills were developed with business ventures, which included a pool hall, skate shop and a sporting goods store. He has been in the swimming pool business since 1972, first with Convertible Pools, then as a partner and president of Aqua Pleasure Pools since 1980. Bill was elected to City Council in October 1983. He was very proud to represent the constituents of Charleswood, Headingley, Tuxedo, Lindenwoods, Whyteridge and Fort Garry throughout the past 27 years and was committed to personally returning all phone calls and e-mails. He held offices of Deputy Mayor (1993), Speaker (1998) and was the Chair of numerous committees including Fiscal Issues (1998-2005) and Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works (2006-present). He also served on Winnipeg Enterprises between 1983 and 2005 (President 1993-1994). The Charleswood Bridge, Kenaston Underpass and Marj Edey Park were among the many accomplishments which marked his political career. Donations can be made to Grace General Hospital Oncology Clinic, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7. The celebration of Bill's life will be held at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Boulevard (at Dieppe Road), on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Chapel Lawn 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My sympathies go out to Bill's family and friends. I will always remember his positive outlook which never seemed to change from childhood days to the present. He will be missed. Stewart White - Posted by: Stewart White (Friend) on: May 16, 2010

  • Bill was a man of great integrity. I have known him for over 30 years. He asked me to represent him and the City on the Board of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1999. Bill always persevered to ensure we will always have professional football in our city. Bill worked closely with Mayor Katz to ensure our new stadium made sense from an economic perspective for all citizens of our great city. I will miss my friend and we all will miss the values by which he chose to live his personal and political life. - Posted by: Gene Dunn (Friend) on: May 07, 2010

  • I have known Bill for most of my life. He went to school with my sisters, and never failed to ask about them when we would chat. I have always been proud to be one of the many who called Bill "The Mayor of Charleswood." Many a time I would call him and be annoyed about something at city hall....he ALWAYS returned my calls, and talked with me about the issue, despite being as busy as he was. Charleswood has lost a great man, who will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Janet James (Friend) on: May 06, 2010
