JON (STEINI) ERICKSON Jon (Steini) Erickson died quietly in the arms of his children and grandchildren on Saturday, May 8 in his home. He was predeceased by his wife Louise, son-in-law Gestur, sister Loa and his parents Jon and Olaf. Steini was born, lived and died on the family property, Akraness, along the Icelandic River just outside of Riverton. He was a much beloved child and had many fond memories of growing up. Steini left school at a young age to work with his father delivering mail to Hecla and Manigatogin, and later enlisted in the Canadian Navy where he was a chief petty officer on a landing craft during the invasion of Normandy. Shortly after his return he purchased his first piece of equipment and began clearing land in the area for local farmers. Over time he began to work in the road building field and eventually built up his equipment to become Erickson Construction. He had a reputation for being honest and trustworthy in his field, and seemed to do particularly well working in difficult areas of the province. The company continues to be operated by his son Craig and grandson Eric. Steini was a simple and unassuming man in spite of his many accomplishments. Steini had a very happy marriage to Louise and missed her deeply since her passing last June. During this past year his children welcomed the opportunity to spend time with him. His grandchildren adored him, and always benefited from his time and attention. He will be missed tremendously by his family who appreciate the lessons that Steini taught them. Surviving Steini are his children Lynne (Otto), Craig (Michelle), Brant, and Kim (Darren). His grandchildren are Ari, Nikolas, Helga, Kristinn, Mark, Thomas, Miriam, Daniel (Shannon); Brittany, Eric, Ryan; Jordan, Jessica; Laura, Haley, and Trina (Blake). He is also survived by his nephews, Thor and Keith and their families. The family would like to thank the St. Boniface Hospital for the amazing care that was provided and a special thanks to his grand daughter and nurse at home Brittany. Memorial service to be held at the Riverton Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 with Pastor Jaycen Snider officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined but if so desired a memorial donation can be made to the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church or Riverton Cemetery. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
