MELVIN SOLAR, B.A., B.ED., M.ED. The family sadly announces the passing of Melvin Solar on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Melvin was born to William and Katherine Solar of Sifton, Manitoba on September 25, 1930. He went to school in Dublin Bay, Sifton and Dauphin. Melvin was an educator. He obtained his B.A., B.Ed., and M.Ed. degrees. He taught at many schools in rural Manitoba and Winnipeg. Melvin was principal of Springfield Heights Elementary School and then principal of 20 years at John Henderson Junior High School in the River East School Division. Melvin married his high school sweetheart, Elsie Genik, on May 22, 1954. They had two sons. Mel defined the word outdoorsman . He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and being at the cottage at Lake Nutimik. He was also an excellent carpenter and a gourmet cook. Mel was an avid traveler and enjoyed many vacations. Mel is survived by his devoted wife, Elsie, their sons, Grant (Yvette) and Todd (Brittany); his two precious grandchildren, Kevin and Justine; brothers and sisters: Margaret, Lawrence (Betty), Helen Welham, Donald, sister-in-law Mary Solar, brother-in-law Nick (Sylvia) and many nieces and nephews. Mel was predeceased by his brother Michael. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the good care and compassion they gave Mel. Memorial service will be held at Glen Eden, 4477 Main Street, Winnipeg, on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Father Frank Szadiak of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mel's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
