FLORENCE EILEEN VIOLET GARD It is with deep sadness that the family of Florence Eileen Violet Gard announce her passing on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010 at The Maples Personal Care Home, Winnipeg. Eileen was predeceased by her parents John and Violet Gard, sister Mary Jaffray (Tom), brothers Frank (June), Jim (Vera), and John. Also by her sister-in-law Lois Gard, niece Judy Savard and nephew Don McKerchar. Eileen is survived by her brothers Mike, Bob (Myrle), and sister-in-law Mary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Eileen was born April 28, 1930, in Winnipeg. Although she travelled extensively around the world, she always called Winnipeg home, No place like it anywhere , she often said. Eileen trained as a Certified Laboratory Technologist and enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Canadian Red Cross. She also spent part of her career working in Australia and New Zealand, and closer to home in Saskatchewan and Ontario. Eileen travelled in her leisure time too, and made many trips to England visiting family and touring the country. Other travels took her to Japan, Hawaii, Continental Europe, many parts of the United States, and coast-to-coast in her beloved Canada. Family and friends brought her great joy. So did her little dog Jeni, her constant and much-loved companion for over 14 years. Auntie as she was fondly called by everyone, took an early retirement to care for her elderly parents. Her devotion to them was amazing - she even took her father to England to see his home once more, when he was 99 years young! She cherished her family, both immediate and extended. Auntie never missed an opportunity to take part in a family celebration, and we all wanted her there with us. Eileen lived for many years in Paradise Village. She made many wonderful friends there and continued to enjoy social times with them even after she moved into an apartment in Ste. Anne's. Auntie was a formidable bridge player, loved Scrabble, logic puzzles, curling and the Blue Bombers! Our beloved Auntie Eileen will be greatly missed by her family and friends, and remembered with fondness and love. To paraphrase her words, There is no one like her anywhere. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3, or a charity of your choice. A service of celebration will be held on Thursday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m. (reception to follow) at St. Saviour's Anglican Church, 690 Munroe Ave. Burial at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
