Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER ERNEST WINTERS VE4ACY January 1, 1935 - May 12,2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather Walter Winters on May 12, 2010 at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 75 years. Wally was predeceased by his father Harry, mother Edna, brother Dave and sister Dorothy. Wally was born January 1, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Remaining to forever cherish Wally's memory are his loving wife Mattie, they would have celebrated their 51st anniversary on May 23, 2010. His daughters Brenda (Wayne), Linda (Andy), son Walter Jr., granddaughter Colleen (Darryl), stepgrandsons Nelson (Michelle), Wade (Mellisa), great-grandson Braiden, stepgreat-grandson Drew. Wally as a youngster growing up spent most of his time at the local community club in Brooklands. His favourite sporting interests were hockey, baseball and soccer. In the early 1950s Wally was hired on by the CPR on Locomotive 2362 as a fireman. Later Wally went to work for the City Of Winnipeg Fire Department in 1956. Wally served the Winnipeg Fire Department for 33 years and five months, retiring April 22,1989 as senior fire prevention officer. After a short retirement, Wally went to work for the Corps Of Commissionaires for 20 years. Many of Wally's hobbies and accomplishments were, being involved in the Pipe Band Circles for approximately 58 years. Pipe bands he played with in the past starting from the year 1947 up to the present time are as follows: Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, Cadets, Queens Own Highlanders (reserve), 402 Air Reserve Squadron, Pipes and Drums (reserve), City Of Transcona Pipes and Drums (Civilian), Khartum Pipe Drums. The greatest part of his career was being a volunteer instructor teaching and working with the younger generation, children and teenagers, teaching them Highland Drumming both in the military and civilian pipe bands as follows: City Of Transcona Pipes Drums (Civilian), HMCS crusade cadets, 177TCA Air Cadets, Heather Girls Pipes Drums (during the 1950s). He was also presented with the Canada 125th Commemorative Medal for outstanding community involvement, also presented with the Navy League Of Canada award of appreciation (under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen). Wally also was a life member of the Royal Canadian Elmwood Legion #9, and a member of the Grand Lodge Of Manitoba, he volunteered at the Winnipeg Humane Society, and was self taught the morse code and Ham radio. Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors at the VGH emergency Dept., and the St. Boniface Hospital emergency Dept, and MICU for the kind and compassionate care. Respecting Wally's wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Wally's life will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Elmwood Legion #9, 920 Narin Ave. at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Wally's name to the Humane Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
