JAMES PIRRIE KERR Peacefully, on May 13, 2010, Jim Kerr passed away at the age of 89 years. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 63 years, Elsie, his six children Karen Hayden (John), Jim (Lynda), Ron (Pat), Dan (Karen), George (Heather) and Jean Janzen (Eric), 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and his sister Agnes Aikens. He was predeceased by his grandson, Steven, his brothers William, Hugh, Robert, Alex, Harry, and sister Mary (Strachan). Jim was born in Lochwinnoch, Scotland in 1920 and immigrated to Canada at the age of seven. After several moves, the family settled in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving as a navigator. He worked for many years at Auto Electric Ltd. as a purchasing agent, then with James Alexander Warehouse until his retirement. Shortly after his marriage to Elsie in 1947, Jim purchased a lot in Weston and began building the family home where they raised their six children. Jim enjoyed life, always having a good time and cherished sharing time with family, especially the large gatherings that happened throughout the year. He was the only one who could say grace at the dinner table. He loved a good joke, was a great story-teller and always a kidder. Dad was a skilled backyard mechanic. The yard saw many different cars in various states. He could fix anything with an engine. During summers dad spent many hours in the garden. Potatoes became a family affair every fall. Dad was a role model and a person to look up to. He was always available to help, often putting the needs of others ahead of his own. Jim was an active member of Sparling United Church, devoting many hours helping out where he could. We would like to express our appreciation to the nurses and doctors at St. Boniface Hospital who took care of Dad. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m., at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. If friends desire, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • We're so sorry to hear of Jim's Passing, Elsie. Jock and I rememered your trip to Vancouver with your youngest daughter when we lived next door at 5826 Highfield Drive. I was out in the front yard gardening and you drove slowly past. We recognized each other and had a cup of tea and visit afterwards. You always seemed such a happy family and Jim always had a happy smile on his face. Diane and Jock Irving from Burnaby, B.C. - Posted by: Diane & Jock Irving (Family) on: May 15, 2010
