MARY SMITH (nee DEMETRIOFF) A grave side service will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Ghost Cemetery, 4387 Main Street, Winnipeg. Mary's ashes will be laid to rest as she wished beside Joseph and Harold. Mom was born in Liverpool, England, May 25, 1916 to Russian parents, Peter and Elizabeth Demetrioff. She was raised and lived in Winnipeg, married Cyril Hicks, and had four children. In 1966 she moved to Vancouver, then in 1971 back to Winnipeg; after several years decided to move to Penticton where she enjoyed the climate and gardening. In 2001 she moved to Maple Ridge where she spent the last nine and one-half years of her life with her daughter Gail and Lee, in their downstairs apartment. Mom lived an independent and active life doing what she wished, and being her own person. She was active in her seniors group (Cameo) joining in 2003, making many friends. Mom loved to go shopping, cook, read cook books, bake, have friends and family in for dinners, see her grandbabies and play with her dogs, Sam and Angel . Mom loved and enjoyed her sister-in law Eunice Whitney from Kelowna, looking forward to her two week visits. She loved her nephews Bill Demetrioff and wife Cathie, who faithfully visited her every two weeks, always with a dozen red roses for their loving aunty. Mom always said I will enjoy the flowers now when I am alive, not when I am gone ; her apartment was always filled with plants and flowers. Eunice, Bill, Cathie and friends have helped Mom through some very difficult times. On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2009, at her home, in her daughter's arms, peacefully Mom went to meet our Lord. A celebration of her life was held at her home on January 10, 2010. It was over flowing with family and friends, with their love and remembrance for a wonderful mother, nana, great-nana, nice nana, and friend that Mom was. She was a very kind, considerate, loving person. She loved when her grandbabies dropped over for a visit, her cookie jar was always full. She was predeceased by her parents, seven brothers, George, John, Walter, Alex, Peter, Willie, Nick, two sisters Elizabeth, grandson Ricky, son-in-law Philip, and son Gerald. She is survived by her children, Joan of Manitoba, Gail and Lee of British Columbia, Bill and Diane of British Columbia and ten grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, several cousins (in particular George), many nieces and nephews and many friends.
