ERNEST HENRY KURTZ 1919 - 2010 On Tuesday, May 25, 2010, Ernest Kurtz passed away at the age of 91 years. Ernest leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Murielle; sons, Ed (Sandra), Ernie Jr. (Sherrill), Don (Lois); daughters, Carole Duke, Jean Ruppel; and sons, Doug (Cheryl) and Ken (Arliss). A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at The First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor Street, led by his nephew Pastor Michael Kurtz. Ernie was the sixth born of 10 children to Andreas and Caroline Kurtz. He was predeceased by his parents and father and mother-in-law, Albert and Ann Jearum. Also predeceased by his brothers, William (Bill), Charlie and Gordon; sister Evelyn; brothers-in-law, Roy Simpson and Michael Morris; sisters-in-law, May Kurtz, Elsie Kurtz, Erna Kurtz and Agnes Kurtz; and son-in-law Glen Duke Sr. Surviving are his brothers, Andrew, Paul (Ed) and Walter; sisters, Marie Simpson and Christine Morris; brother-in-law Bud Mosurinjohn; and sisters-in-law, Pat Kurtz and Mary Kurtz. Ernie and Murielle were married on September 20, 1939 and were blessed with seven children, 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Ernie enlisted in the RCAF during 1941 and spent 26 years in various capacities rising from the ranks to a commissioned officer. Retiring at age 47, he then worked as a real estate agent and car salesman for several years, followed by about 10 years as a cabinet installer and troubleshooter for Citation Cabinets before finally retiring at age 65. Ernie was an avid follower of sports, especially his beloved Blue Bombers, Toronto Blue Jays and the Winnipeg Jets. He loved to golf with his sons and always had a passion for politics and gardening, especially growing the best begonias possible, which he cared for diligently. He grew to dislike the cold winters in Winnipeg and took advantage of the opportunity to spend three to four months in warmer climates for the past 25 years. Dad was a God loving man who cared for his family, was very proud of their accomplishments, and supported all with his time and the many skills he possessed. He was hard working and a perfectionist who left no stone unturned. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and caregivers, especially those in the Neurosurgery Ward 5GA at the Health Sciences Centre. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations are welcomed in Ernie's honour to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba (the disease that ultimately took his life), 7 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2J 1P2 or a charity of your choice.
