ALEXANDER ANDERSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander (Alex) Anderson on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Gimli Community Health Centre, aged 86 years. Alex was born on December 31, 1923 in Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his brother Stanley, and daughter Karen. Leaving to cherish his memory are his sisters Jean and Margaret; his loving wife of 33 years Elizabeth; daughters Miranda (Chris) and Charlene (Todd); sons, Alex Jr. (Lisa) and Randy; twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Alex was a Second World War Navy Veteran with the R.C.N.V.R. from 1942 to 1945 enlisted at H.M.C.S. Chippewa in Winnipeg. He saw active service in the Atlantic convoy and Pacific minesweeping as a Leading Seaman Torpedoman. Alex worked at Weston's Bakeries for 42 years as plant chief power engineer (1st class) and retired in 1988. In 1991 Dad built his retirement home in Winnipeg Beach and enjoyed many sunny days on the deck in the pool with his granddaughter Eve. In his spare time he took on the job as building inspector for the town of Winnipeg Beach and Village of Dunnottar until 2005. Alex was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brach #61 and was Treasurer from 1994 to 1999. He looked forward to his few casino trips to the US and South Beach. Dad had a great sense of humour, love of dogs and enjoyed his sports. Grandpa's shortbread was the best! The family would like to express their many thanks to the staff at the Gimli Community Health Centre for their compassion and assistance during this difficult time. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small. With a loving heart and a willing hand, For us you did them all. Thanks for the years you gave us, And for the precious times we shared. We only pray that when you left us, You know how much we cared. Funeral services will take place on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church in Winnipeg Beach. Viewing at 10:00 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 am. Internment will follow at Polish Pioneer Cemetery. Should friends and family so desire, donations may be made to the Gateway Foundation, Winnipeg Beach.
