MARIA (MARY) MAKSYM With deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Maria Maksym on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at St. Boniface Hospital. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Helena Twerdun and her husband Roger, their children Deondra and Tanner; son-in-law Dennis, his children Jennifer Hardy (Michael), Matthew (Randi), and Alanna (Cody); her siblings Teresa, Krystyna, Jan and, Boleslaw in Poland, as well as numerous family members in Poland and Detroit. She was predeceased by her daughter Christine in 1992 and her beloved Stanley in 2005. Mom or Nanny' as she was known, was born in Poland on August 2, 1925. Forced to work in Germany during the Second World War, she bravely chose to immigrate to Canada on her own after the war. She settled in Winnipeg where she met Stanley; they married in 1951 and began to raise their family. They moved to River Heights in 1968 where their home was the heart of our family for 40 years. Mom worked for Eaton's in the Valley Room for 23 years at the Grill Bar where her warm smile greeted many customers. An incredibly hardworking person, she believed in working herself strong , a trait which sustained her through breast cancer at 39, and Christine's and Dad's illnesses. Rarely idle, she was always busy looking after her family, home and garden. She was renowned for her cabbage rolls, perogies and apple pies. She was an avid fan of the Jets, Manitoba Moose, and especially the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Mom was a warm, generous caregiver; she was wise with a gentle sense of humor, and loved and adored by our family. We will always remember her for her faith in God, her strength of character and her deep love for her family. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson In the Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 10 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 Brebeuf Place, with Fr. Darren Gurr officiating. Interment will follow after the Mass. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Thorvaldson's and to Dr. Kevin Coates and staff of 6AM at St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care for Mom. She was most appreciative. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St. Suite 200, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 0K6 or The Winnipeg Humane Society. Rest in Peace Mom. We love you and you will always be in our hearts. Thomson In the ParK 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com
