SHEILA FUREY July 14, 1948 - June 8, 2010 Peacefully, after a ten-month battle with cancer, Sheila passed away at the age of 61. Sheila will be dearly missed by her son Dan McDougall and grandson Austin, and by her mother Nancy Furey, sister Linda, sister Joyce (Mark) and brother David. Sheila was predeceased by her father James Furey in 1989, her brother Brian Furey in 2009, and brother-in-law Glen Morrison in 2009. Sheila grew up in St. Vital, attending Windsor School and Glenlawn Collegiate. She later spent a number of years in White Rock, BC and Edmonton, Alberta before returning to Winnipeg in 1995. Family was important to Sheila and she especially cherished her close and loving relationship with her son and best friend, Dan. She had a great deal of empathy and compassion for those less fortunate. She also had a love for all living things: her deep appreciation for nature and for animals was inspiring. She was an avid and gifted gardener and passed this talent on to her son Dan. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially at the lake where we had a lot of laughs. When we were all there she was always the first to suggest a game of Scrabble, often amusing us with her unique creativity in inventing new words ( the dictionary is wrong! ). Sheila also loved music and singing (she had a great singing voice). She enjoyed attending many music festivals throughout the years, on occasion took part in her church choir, and sometimes at the lake sang late-night Motown tunes with her sisters! Sheila will also be missed by her close and special friends: her ex-husband, Don McDougall (who remained a life-long friend), Marlene Harrison, Barbara Holt, Linda Parsons, and Doreen Healey. In recent years Sheila's spiritual life took on more importance to her, and her belief in God helped sustain her through her illness. Through her involvement in Morrow Gospel Church she made a number of good friends: Pastor Ralph Unger, Colleen and Ed Tackaberry, Erna Hamilton, and Sadie Hildebrand, who was with Sheila when she passed away. Sheila enjoyed their kindness and friendship over the years, and we thank them for their prayers during her illness. We are very grateful to the terrific staff of 3East Wing, Riverview Hospital, for their kind and compassionate care for Sheila in her final weeks. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Sheila's life will be held on Friday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m., Morrow Gospel Church, 755 St. Anne's Rd., Winnipeg, Pastor Ralph Unger presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

  • Sheila and I lived together for awhile in a house on Beresford then in an apartment on Osborne in the 1970s. She was grace personified. Got letters from her after she moved to BC. - Posted by: Robert Hoffman (ex boyfriend) on: Dec 07, 2013
