HIROSHI ROBERT SHIMODA Peacefully and with dignity Hiroshi Robert Shimoda passed away, with his wife at his side, on June 7, 2010 at the Palliative Care Unit of the St. Boniface General Hospital. He was 84 years old. Remaining to always cherish his memory are Lillian, his loving wife of 52 years who provided full care for him until his passing; his daughter Joy Letkemann, husband Ted, their daughters Jennifer and Kyla; his daughter Lisa Shimoda-Loechner, husband Marc, their daughter Connor and son Braeden. He was predeceased by his father Kumeji; mother Chiyono; brothers Charlie, Archie and George; sisters Kay, Yosh and Misao. He is now reunited with his family, catching up with his brother George and sister Yosh. He held a very special relationship with both of them. Bob was born in Mission, British Columbia on January 3, 1926. From Mission he moved to Picture Butte, Alberta, then to Montreal, Quebec for a short period and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He married Lillian on March 15, 1958. Bob and Lil marked their 50th wedding anniversary back in 2008 and enjoyed a wonderful celebration with family and friends. Bob had a very strong work ethic. His jobs always involved working on automobiles. He was employed at Subway Garage, Standard Springs, Neuls Springs and Chassis and Allan's Alignment and Frame. He later purchased Allan's Alignment and Frame from Aubrey Allan and owned it until his retirement in 1987. Bob enjoyed curling, bowling and most of all golfing. He spent many years as a member of Rossmere Golf and Country Club. He scored three holes-in-one throughout his golfing career. He eventually bought Lil a set of clubs and they enjoyed many years of golfing together in different locations throughout the province and down in Florida. Throughout their married life, Bob and Lil had the opportunity to travel to places like Hawaii, San Francisco and Florida. They enjoyed Florida life so much that they decided to purchase 2658 Regatta Drive in Sarasota. Life in Florida was great. Bob could have a garden in the backyard, pick grapefruits and oranges everyday and attend the Saturday morning Flea Market in Bradenton for bargains where he would purchase a smokie dog for lunch. Many Manitoba winters were spent down in Florida, where they created so many good memories with friends and family. Bob loved to garden and the condo on St. Mary's Road did not have the space for a decent garden. In September of 1997, Bob and Lil moved out to Lorette, Manitoba where he had his dream garden. Many fresh vegetables were harvested throughout the summer and in the fall pumpkins, squash and napa to share with friends and family. He enjoyed spending time on his deck which overlooked the garden out back using his special fly swatter to keep the bugs away. It was called his happy place . Bob was a man of few words. He enjoyed sitting back and taking in the conversations around him. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, playing dominoes and cards. Most of all, he absolutely adored his grandchildren and spending time with them. Even in the later years, he would always wear the biggest smile when he heard their voices as they entered a room. They were the light of his life and when he was around them, it became his new happy place . The family would like to thank nurse Leah, Dr. St. Goddard and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital. Bob and Helen McKenzie and the breakfast group. Respite workers Jari, Aikins and the homecare coordinators. Ushers Fred Kaita, Dave Koga and Gary Schulz. Registrars Roy and Ron Kaita. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. A reception will follow the service. Interment will be at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined.
