CAROLE JUDITH HANDFORD (nee BOYLE) July 19, 1937 - June 20, 2010 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Carole Handford at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, June 20 at 6:35 p.m. She was surrounded by all the people she loved at the time of her death. Carole had suffered from C.O.P.D. for 27 years. She fought courageously against this disease, often beating considerable odds but in the end, she succumbed to the ravages of this illness. In addition, Carole had recently been diagnosed with lymphoma but had been free of the disease when she died. Even though she was often very ill, this did not curtail her zest for life and her involvement with all of the activities of family and friends. Carole had an amazing spirit and love of life. Carole is survived by her devoted husband, Lyall, her daughter Patti (Jeff), sons Peter (June), John (Tannis) and Jim (Jill). She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Sara (Clint), Ryan (Tarryn), Laura, Ben, Adam, Ariel, Kaiya, Talia and recent great-granddaughter, Rebecca. Also left to mourn are her siblings Stephen Boyle, Lyn Sparkes, and Larry Boyle (Lis), as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, good friends and neighbours. Carole was born in Kenora, Ontario and moved with her family to Winnipeg in 1948. She attended Wolseley and Isaac Brock schools and Gordon Bell High. Carole was very athletic and participated in various sports, often excelling in most. Carole and Lyall were married on May 19, 1956, and raised four lovely children. In May of 2006 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1972 she went to work for Boeing-Winnipeg, beginning in the Lay-Up Department and advancing to a supervisory position there. She finished her career at Boeing in the HR Department. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mike Stephensen and his assistant Leslie at the Assiniboine Clinic, Dr. Pat Harris at Grace CancerCare, the ICU doctors and staff at the Grace, Concordia and Health Sciences Centre Hospitals for the compassionate care Carole received. Special thanks also to Dr. S. Mink, Carole's Respirologist for many years, and to Beth Rutherford, Minister at Crestview United Church. In accordance with Carole's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or The Lung Association of Winnipeg. Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, phone 949-2200, in in charge of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We had the pleasure of meeting & knowing Carole through her husband, Lyall. I personally worked with Lyall when at Grain Insurance & Guarantee. We spent some fun time at their home over holidays at Christmastime and in the summer. We are saddened for Lyall and the family and hope that each year carries with it rekindled memories and hope for a brighter future. - Posted by: Dee [Dolores] & Peter Newman (Past work colleague of Lyall & Friends of Carole & Lyall) on: Oct 29, 2014
