PEARL REID Mom passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, June 27, 2010 at Heritage Lodge in Winnipeg. Pearl was born to Evalena and Jack Challenger, in Mount Forest, ON, on February 18, 1908. At a young age the family moved west to homestead just outside of Edgerton, AB. Pearl attended Normal School in Edmonton and started her teaching career in a one room school, teaching Grades 1 to 8 at Deville, (Cooking Lake), AB. After the death of her second husband mom resumed teaching. She taught Grade 4 for 17 years, at Woodhaven School in Winnipeg, retiring in 1973. Pearl leaves to celebrate her long, well lived life, one son, Allan (Helen) Reid, of Vancouver and her daughter Jean Klassen of Winnipeg. Grandchildren Darlene Klassen, Keith Reid, Lisa (Brennan) Hirayama, Rob (Sheilagh) Klassen and Danny Klassen. Pearl had three great-grandchildren, Kaitlin and Tyler Klassen, and Isabella Hirayama. Mom was predeceased by her first husband Nick Peniak, 1944 in New Norway, AB; her second husband Peter Reid, 1955, Winnipeg; her sister Kathleen Meade, 1982, in Edson, AB; and her first born son John Michael Reid, 2008, in Winnipeg. My mom is my most admired and respected person. In spite of many difficulties that life tossed her way, she faced every obstacle with fortitude and determination and overcame them. Mom took great pleasure in the simple things in life, such as watching the Lawrence Welk show on TV, or sitting in the gazebo, on a summer evening, with a glass of Johnny Walker scotch in her hand. Retirement didn't slow mom down; she walked or ran to Portage Avenue to catch a bus three times a week to go bowling and get her hair done, right up until she was 90. I'm so grateful that I had these last 20 plus years living with Mom, and only found it necessary to put her in a care home after her 99th birthday. I thank all the staff at Heritage Lodge for the loving care given to Mom these past three years. Most of all, thank you Mom for always being there for each and every one of us when we needed your love and guidance. We love you with all our hearts. Rest in peace our most precious Mother and Grandmother. A private family celebration of Mom's life was held at Neil Bardal Inc. on Monday evening, June 28, followed by cremation.
