Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANDRE MEYER February 21, 1931 - July 5, 2010 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of André Meyer on July 5, 2010 at the age of 79 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg. André was born in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 50 years, Agnès (nee Le Heiget), his children Rose-Marie (Joedy) Gieni, Jeannine Julius, and Jean-Louis (Cindy) Meyer and his grandchildren Kevin and Matthew Julius, Laurie and Geoff Gieni and Nicole Meyer-Nunn. He will be remembered by his brother Auguste (Odile), and three sisters Marie-Thérèse Brunet, Raymonde (Alphonse) Bézely and Jeanne (Joseph) Le Heiget. He also leaves behind numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Pierre-Jean Meyer (1967) and mother Marie (Comte) Meyer (1986), his brothers Elie, (Alice), René Meyer, and his sister Marcelle (Reginald) Champagne. André was baptized in the parish church in Notre-Dame de Lourdes by his great-uncle Father Jean-Marie Comte. His godparents were his aunt and uncle Jean-Baptiste and Germaine Comte. He attended Notre Dame Elementary School and then St. Boniface College for four years. He began his working career as a labourer for Manitoba Hydro then enjoyed one of his favoured trades by working at various local farms. André then found his calling in the family business as a baker at the Notre-Dame Bakery while also continuing his love of farming until 1974. For the next seven years he drove a school bus for Mountain School Division. In 1981, the family moved to Winnipeg, where André and Agnès became manager/caretakers of apartment buildings. In 1993 they retired and returned to Notre-Dame de Lourdes. He was president of the minor hockey association in Notre Dame and was also part of a group who delivered Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed his quieter days tending to his garden and flower beds as well as reading the Free Press. André spent many days preparing for winter by chopping wood for the wood stove that he installed in the basement. His favourite pastime began in the fall, hunting deer and other game. André was hard-working, ambitious with a remarkable abundance of energy and a keen sense of humour. He was skilled in many areas, be it carpentry, plumbing, mechanics and had always maintained an interest in agriculture. He loved to spend time with his family helping with various projects at their homes. He especially enjoyed watching his grandsons play hockey and his granddaughter's gymnastics and dance competitions as well as teaching the grandkids to cheat at cards. Grand2pa/Gumpy, you were the best grandfather we could ask for, you made it out to every big event in our lives, so many memories will be cherished. You are loved and missed so very much and we know you will watch over us throughout our lives, rest in peace. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Léon Mubikayi in the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Recitation of the Rosary, Eulogy and Video Tribute at 1:30 p.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. The Family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care provided by the staff of Foyer Valade and the Victoria General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre Urology staff. Special thanks to Dr. Mark Elkin, Dr. Hobson, Dr. Pronovault, Dr. B. Peters and Dr. Reynolds.
