RON MCMURCHY It is with deep sadness that the family of Ron McMurchy announces his passing, peacefully in his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Friday, July 9, 2010. He was born on the family homestead on October 15, 1934. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Phyllis, of 56 years, his children Christine (Brent) Checkley, Ron (Charlotte), Tom (Gail), Owen (Gillian), Sandra (John) Skiba, Susan (late Jim) Hyslop, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents John and Minnie, brother Jack, and three sisters Margaret, Loretta, and Mildred, as well as a brother and sister in infancy and granddaughter Leanne Skiba. He started at a young age of 17 working for the Manitoba Rolling Mills, all the while working on his grain, hay and cattle farm. He retired from the MRM in February 1989 after 36 years of service, but continued farming full time until his illness. One of his great passions was farming and the love for animals. He enjoyed fun excursions with Phyllis around the province looking for the best soup in Manitoba and making new friends along the way. Ron's interests ranged from building bird houses, fixing tractors and was always busy doing something in the garage. He will always be remembered for his generosity, kindness, compassion and calm, quiet manner. Prayer service will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk. Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. also at the chapel with Pastor Neill Stitt officiating. Burial to follow at Ashfield Cemetery, Ashfield Road. Pallbearers will be Philip and Jason McMurchy, Darren Skiba, Harvey Fiddler, Keith Wytinck and Derek Heidinger. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ron can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
