KENNETH RAYMOND CONRAD 1932 - 2010 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ken Conrad, aged 78, on July 11, 2010. Ken was predeceased by his wife Barbara in 1992, his parents George and Mary, and his siblings Lesley, William, Gary, Audrey and Joyce. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Mark (Cathy), Susan (Frank), and his grandchildren Meghan, Laura and Kalin, his sister-in-law Sandy Walker, as well as many other family members and friends. Born in Kingston, Ontario on April 4, 1932, Dad soon moved to Winnipeg as a young child and had to enter the work force at a young age due to the untimely passing of his father. He started out as a printer's apprentice, but later returned to school to complete high school and obtain his Certificate in Municipal Administration from the University of Manitoba. He worked for the Rural Municipality of Fort Garry until 1971 when it was amalgamated with the City of Winnipeg. At this time he was offered a position as the Treasurer of the Town of Selkirk and stayed there until 1992 when he retired, as the Town Manager, to spend time with Mom. He was a well respected member of the Manitoba Municipal Administrators Association. His opinions were sought out and valued by not only his peers and colleagues but by many in the political community as well. His open door policy encouraged all to come to him as a boss, a mentor or as a friend with any thing at any time. Dad was always active in sports, and he carried this passion throughout his life. Whether pitching a no-hitter in his youth for the Elmwood Giants, or later on bowling, curling, golfing, coaching baseball or landing Master Anglers, he always participated in all that he did with good sportsmanship and a natural athletic ability. Although his health prevented him from active participation in some endeavours, he still continued to play billiards with good friend Jack Trueman and over the past few years enjoyed the many people he met while playing Bingo at the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre. With his grandchildren a priority, he could often be found cheering on the sidelines at their numerous and varied sporting events. Dad was also an avid supporter of Winnipeg's local sports teams, attending curling and Moose games in the winter and Goldeye and Bomber games on spring and summer evenings. Happily, he had the pleasure only last week of attending a Twins game in Minneapolis. Amongst his family, friends, peers and co-workers dad was known as a gentle, kind, understanding and fair person. We will miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 16, 2010, in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Vitt officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends so choose, donations may be made in Ken's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of their choosing. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
