DOREEN SPOONER (NAN) It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the death of Doreen. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 77 years. Remaining to forever cherish Nan's memory will be her two daughters and their families - Janice (Bruce) Mallon and grandchildren Lindsay and Kyle; Elaine (John) McIntyre and granddaughters Meaghan, Kelsey and Mallory; sister Barbara Chew (Gordon) in Winnipeg; brother Kenneth (Flo) as well as other family in England. She was predeceased by her husband Ron ( Grumps ) in 2003, after nearly 50 years of a most wonderful marriage. Nan was a legal secretary for 30 years, proudly retiring in the mid-eighties to enjoy a terrific period of life with Ron. Golfing and living near Gimli in the summer months was followed by their grandchildren's school and sports activities during the winters. Many family trips to England, the west coast of Canada and the US - especially Grand Forks, provided fond memories for Nan and all of her family. Family was important and most precious to Nan, especially the grandchildren, who remember ... I am going to miss visiting you and having our talks together. (Lindsay); I will miss walks on the beach collecting shells with you and enjoying your special rib dinners. (Kyle); Little Nan, from the days at the Gimli Golf course, to me sharing stories of my golf game now, I will be using your putter so you can always look over my shoulder when I line up my putts. (Meaghan); You were the only one who could hear me sneak out of bed, so please hear me again when I say I'll love you forever. (Kelsey); I will always remember how we annoyed Grumps by setting off the fire alarm when we made our eight rhubarb pies. (Mallory). Nan's many friends and acquaintances loved her as well ... the simple smile, the helping hand, the knowing eye and the quick wit simply made her one-of-a-kind. Everyone she came in contact with has had a touching story to tell about Nan. Her interest in the well-being of others was always above that of her own, and living at the Eastern Star Chalet increased her circle of well-loved friends, who were there for Nan when she needed them as her health declined. In compliance with Doreen's wishes, no Funeral Service will be held. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the many stops Nan had along the way - not only did she require many different health services, she was more than capable of posing challenging diagnoses and treatment paths ... which intrigued many in the medical community. The family would especially like to thank the caring and compassionate staff on the 3E Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre. As well, many thanks to Dr. G. Kalansky and Dr. C. Bradshaw for their years of caring for Nan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit 3E, One Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4 Attention: Patient Care Team Manager - 3E. Rest peacefully and say hi to Grumps for us - we love you Nan, we'll miss you pet.
