MARY HELENA MCCARTHY (nee FINLAY) On July 18, 2010, at the age of 84, at her residence in Lions Manor, Mary, loving wife of the late Daniel McCarthy, passed away peacefully. Born in Winnipeg on May 3, 1926, Mary is survived by her four daughters Patti (Rick), Mary Ann (Darrell), Gail (Mark) and Carolin (Mike); grandchildren Dan (Becky), Lisa (Patrick), Ryan (Alanna), Jay (Tanya), Lee Ann (George), Jennica, Jamieson, Analeisa, Marysa, Riley and Janessa; and great-grandchildren Melora, Dara, Ethan, Lennon, Noah, Hayden and Helena; siblings Anna, Bill (Donna), Des and Bob. She was predeceased by her parents Eugene and Rose Finlay and sister Thelma. Mary was extremely shy, so much so that her parish priest Father Macaulay helped her obtain her first job at Kraft Cheese in downtown Winnipeg. She later worked at Hudson's Bay flagship store until she married in 1953. Mom and Dad were a team. They worked well together, one encouraged the other and they did everything together. They enjoyed camping and going out for lunch on Friday's at The Bay for fish and chips. After mass on Sunday at St. Ann's, they often went for brunch with their good friends Len and Esther. Mom loved to shop, and a good shopper she was. She had a great sense of fashion and always looked her best. She was very organized and loved to clean and take care of her home. Baking for Dad was part of her Saturday routine. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to knit and her creativity showed in the many special outfits worn by her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent numerous hours knitting for Rossbrook House and always had a handmade gift ready for baby showers and other occasions. Mom had a kind heart and quiet manner. She loved to dance and enjoyed watching her family have fun; it always put a smile on her face. Mom was a dedicated member of St. Ann's Church where she had many friends, one being Sister Alice who she always referred to as her Special Buddy . She participated as a Eucharistic Minister and an usher. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Sister Alice Konefall for her friendship and great support over the years. Mom lost her soulmate when Dad passed away in 2005. The sense of loss she felt was too much for her. She is now able to join her loving husband in the afterlife. Funeral service will be held at St. Ann's Church, 271 Hampton St., on Wednesday, July 21 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice. We miss you Mom (Nana/Grandma) and love you.
