Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I accompanied Father Columba with my classical guitar whenever he performed in the Chicago metropolitan area during the first par to the 1970s. It was a privilege to know and work with him. - Posted by: Paul Reithmaier (Chicago Friend (now in St. Lojis, Missouri)) on: Apr 14, 2021

  • I discovered Fr. McManus' album "The Single Priest" a few days ago. His voice is still touching hearts. I pray for the repose of his soul and ask anyone reading this will do the same. A reminder that the simple things we do in life transcend time and space. God bless, Father! Pray for us! - Posted by: Theodoric (Fan) on: Dec 04, 2019

  • I met Father McManus in 1966 when he played for a Folk Mass at our church, St. James' Anglican Church, Rosemere, Quebec. He was a friend of our parish priest, Ed Vokey, who had a radio program in Montreal that Father Columba had been a guest on. As a member of our Young Adult's group (and long before I was ordained) I was one of the organizers of the Mass and it was my privilege to pick him up at the seminary he was living at. I was impressed by his humility and godliness and that made his singing all the more meaningful. Although the 1960's were a time of social ferment, Christians were finding new ways of reaching out and hymnody was evolving to include spiritual songs that brought the Gospel to bear on the issues of the day. Religious people like Father Columba and the Singing Nuns helped to bridge the denominational divide and humanized our faith. They had a greater impact than history has perhaps honoured. God Bless the memory of Father Columba. - Posted by: Rev.Canon Phil Bristow (I met him once) on: Mar 22, 2016
