GARD October 9, 1926 - July 25, 2010 With deep sadness the family of Robert William Philip Gard announces his passing at the Toronto General Hospital following a sudden illness while on family vacation at Lake Erie, Ontario. Predeceased by his parents John and Violet Gard, sisters Mary (Tom) and Eileen, brothers Frank (June), Jim (Vera) and John, sister-in-law Lois Gard, niece Judy Savard and nephew Don McKerchar. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Myrle Gard, his children Kevin (Julia), Diane (Jim), Suzanne (Glenn) and Geoffrey (Jo-Anne), grandchildren Lauren and Madison Gard Barna, Shae Thomas, David Foreman, Chris Foreman, Laura (Chris and Raina) Sauley, his brother Mike Gard, sister-in-law Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Winnipeg, Bob enjoyed a wonderful childhood in St. James with his large family and his dog (Pal). He enjoyed riding his bike and working at the drug store as a delivery boy. Bob always worked hard to help the family and liked to tease his siblings. He joined the army as a dispatch rider then went to British Columbia briefly working in a foundry then on to Vancouver Island as a logger. Returning to Winnipeg, Bob met and later married Myrle; who was introduced to him by his sister Eileen at his homecoming party. Putting his career on hold he worked as a C.P.R. trainman supporting Myrle through her medical education. He then finished his education became an accountant, and later a real estate agent and broker. Early retirement followed his successful radical cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Early on, Bob enjoyed golfing and socializing at Rossmere Country Club, attending thoroughbred racing at Assiniboia Downs, and frequent trips to Las Vegas. In later years he enjoyed outings with his sons, visiting his daughters and their families, and sending daily emails. Services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., viewing at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg with reception to follow at Chapel Lawn. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
