Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER ZARECKI Walter passed away peacefully, on July 30, 2010 at the Pinawa Hospital, with Martha, his loving wife of 65 years, by his side. Walter was born February 24, 1922. During the war he was a Flying Officer with the RCAF. Walter married Martha in 1945 and together they farmed in Lee River, near Lac du Bonnet. Walter became one of the areas largest land developers. Together with the late Robert Kost, he developed the original concepts for, and was the original developer of the Granite Hills Golf Course near Lac du Bonnet. He was especially proud of his involvement in this project which he considered a great asset for the community. Walter was always concerned with people and the betterment of his community. At the age of 33 he became youngest mayor in the Province. He was Mayor of the town of Lac du Bonnet for seven years and later Reeve of the RM of Lac du Bonnet for nine years. During the years he was in local politics he worked hard on social issues and was very involved in building an arena and district health centre for the area. He was on the Board of Trustees for the Lac du Bonnet District Health Centre for nine years during which time the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home came into existence. At various other times in his life he was Chairman of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Control Board, and was on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Agricultural Credit Corporation. Throughout their married life Walter and Martha helped many children through foster care. Until he became ill last year he continued to take an active interest in in the family farm, in land development, and in community affairs, continuing to encourage support for supportive housing for seniors in the area. He is member of the Lac du Bonnet Legion, and in the past, was a member of the Lac du Bonnet Lions Club. Walter was a gentle, caring and compassionate man, and a wonderful community leader. He also found time to spend with his family, playing endless games of cribbage with family members and sneaking treats to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a good family man and will be missed. Walter was predeceased by his son Jerry in 1985. He leaves to mourn his wife Martha, children Cliff (Marilyn), Adelard (Betty Ann), Irene (Clair), Tom (Cindy), and a large extended family including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, surviving siblings, siblings' in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Van Gend and the staff at the Pinawa Hospital for the wonderful and compassionate care he received during his extended stay. A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lac du Bonnet Legion. In lieu of flowers donations to the Lac du Bonnet Foundation would be appreciated.
