JOHN-DAVID (J-D) LYON
Born: Apr 16, 1933
Date of Passing: Jul 29, 2010
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN-DAVID (J-D) LYON April 16, 1933 - July 29, 2010 J-D leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Val (Kinley), children, Cecil, Deborah (Keith) and Pamela (Jeff). For those who knew and loved him and despite all his many, many accomplishments, he leaves behind his six grandchildren that were all, each of them, the apples of his eye: Megan (20), Brett (18), Cole (16), Tyler (14), Jordan (13) and Jacob (11). Braemar (the Collie) and Rylee (the Springer Spaniel) will miss Grandpa and his treats - a lot. J-D enjoyed a remarkable life with an extended family that too will miss him. From his brother Robert (Adina) and their children, Garth (Kari), Derek (Marnie) and Janet (Martin) through the Spences, Joplings, Keedians, Smiths, Kinleys and Stevensons to the many, many friends he and Val shared through their almost 55 years together. There are too, too many to mention but you all know who you are. J-D was many things in his long and eventful life. As a curler he represented Newfoundland in the 1960 Brier as skip and Manitoba in the 1961 Brier as skip. An avid sailor, golfer and skier he made a point to involve his family in all his endeavours so much so that his six grandchildren are all becoming formidable curlers in their own right. Brett and Cole thrilled their grandfather just this spring when they won the Ontario School Boys Championships. J-D started his work life as an Air Traffic Controller organizing and then becoming the first President of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association. Amongst his many other accomplishments, he was City Councillor for West Kildonan, Chairman of the Seven Oaks School Division, and Trustee for the Carleton Board of Education in Ottawa. Perhaps his proudest accomplishment outside of family was that of President and CEO (1992 to 2000) of the Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA). J-D retired from the CBAA in 2000. He and Val enjoyed retirement returning to the beloved cottage (Lyon's Den) at Matlock each summer. This has always been the summer focus for the family and especially the grandchildren. A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. in the Church Hall of St. Martin's-In-The-Field Anglican Church, 160 Smithfield Avenue, following which there will be a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be preferred. 586-8044

Sorry to hear John passed on. Remember him well as the giant guy who curled so well. Knew his lead in curling in Edmonton who also passed on. How time flies. - Posted by: Edward (Acquaintance at Goose Bay 1959-60 and curler) on: Mar 11, 2023

Dear Val: We were deeply saddened to learn of J D's passing. Although our friendship was fairly new we did share mutual memories of Selkirk, Manitoba. We enjoyed your company, meeting your friends and a visit to the cottage with the Scotts. We are thinking of you and your family and send you our deepest sympathy. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Lyon. A larger than life presence in the best sense of the phrase - fiercely intelligent yet humble, confident yet kind, never too busy to take the time to talk, wicked sense of humour. Made such an impact on those that knew him, so I can only imagine how much he was appreciated by his family. He'll be missed, but we were fortunate to have known him. Much love to you all, Wayne Eagles & family (Anna, Jake, Natasha) - Posted by: Wayne Eagles (Acquaintance) on: Aug 04, 2010
