GRANT CONLEY It is with deepest sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Grant Conley, on August 2, 2010 at the Riverview Health Centre with his family by his side. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife (and best friend) Gloria, daughter Cheryl (Tom), son Craig (Lorna), granddaughters Kari (Tyler), Sara and Megan and great-grandson Monte. Also, surviving are his sisters Thelma, Mildred, Shirley (Jack), Beverley (Allan), Marlene (Lloyd) and brother Raymond (Bev) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Blanche and Ruth. Grant spent his younger years growing up in the Interlake area of Manitoba with his parents Lillian and Andrew. He was one of nine siblings, seven sisters and one brother. At a fairly young age he set out in search of a career and was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1943 where he was first a wiper, then fireman and later worked as an engineer on the Via Rail until his retirement in 1985. While he was employed by the CPR he was granted a leave of absence to serve in the Canadian Navy during World War II. When the war was over, he returned to resume his employment at the CPR. Grant was loyal and took great pride in what he did. Grant met Gloria in 1950 and began their courtship. They became engaged on Valentine's Day in 1951 and married on August 24, 1951. They not only shared the same hopes and dreams for their future but birthdates as well. With a lot of planning and hard work they were able to achieve their goals and dreams. They built their dream home in Charleswood in 1960. Grant literally built the home with his bare hands. They enjoyed sharing their home with family and friends for weekend bbq's and swimming in the pool and it became known as GG's hangout. Grant became an excellent handyman and took great pride in whatever project he undertook. Gloria was always there to offer encouragement, support, and a new plan for the next project. They were a team in their endeavours. Their daughter Cheryl was born in 1953 and was her Dad's pride and joy. Their son Craig was welcomed in 1961 and he too was Dad's dream come true. They continued to reside in Charleswood until 1990 when Grant and Gloria moved from their home into a condo. They purchased a cottage at Falcon Lake, spending 21 years there. It was Grant's paradise. During summer months Grant enjoyed fishing and golfing with his buddies. The winter months were get-a-ways from the cold. They travelled to places around the world, too numerous to mention. Long stays in Australia were a favourite along with a special cruise on the Tahiti Princess. He was blessed with three beautiful granddaughters, Kari, Sara and Megan, and an adorable great-grandson Monte. He was their loving Papa and will be deeply missed. In spite of his medical situation Grant had a zest for life. He kept a positive attitude towards his illness, with the loving support of Gloria and his family he felt peace and assurance. Grant will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was fortunate to have many friends of all ages. Rest in Peace, Grant, Dad and Papa. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those that showed their acts of kindness and support through this difficult time. We would also like to send a special thanks to the nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre for their understanding and great care shown to Grant. A special thanks to Bonnie and Stephanie for being there in the end. A celebration of Grant's life will take place on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you so desire, donations can be made to Riverview Health Centre, #1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
