ELIZABETH ANN SHERMAN September 3, 1932 - August 2, 2010 Peacefully on August 2, 2010 at the age of 77 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Survived by her husband, Louis R. (Bud) Sherman, and their three children, Cathy, Christopher and Todd, and their partners. Also survived by her sister-in-law Joan Weir, five nephews and a niece. Predeceased by her brothers-in-law Dr. Ormond Weir and Ronald Cantlie, Q.C. and her sister-in-law Barbara Cantlie. Lizanne was born in Winnipeg, the only child of Dr. W. Grant Beaton, Chief of Surgery at Misericordia Hospital, and Ann Stephanie Jonsson Beaton, a nurse. She attended Riverbend School for Girls in Winnipeg. In her youth, Lizanne spent a great deal of time at her family's cottage at Lake of the Woods, where she loved canoeing. She had great affection for animals and nature. Lizanne was very active at the University of Manitoba. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, despite, by her own admission, having spent more time playing bridge than attending classes. She was a University cheerleader and was fashion model of the month for August, 1951 in the University's newspaper, The Manitoban. As Sergeant-at-Arms for the University's youth parliament, she distinguished herself as the first woman to bear the mace into the Manitoba Legislature. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, she studied social work for a year at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She then went to work for the Children's Aid Society of Winnipeg. At Lake of the Woods, she met Bud, son of The Most Reverend L. Ralph Sherman, Archbishop of Rupert's Land, and Carolyn Gillmor Sherman. Bud and Lizanne were married in Winnipeg on December 28, 1955. They moved to Vancouver in 1956, and returned to Winnipeg in December, 1957. Bud and Lizanne made their home and built their family in Winnipeg over the next 30 years. Lizanne loved spending time with her family at their cottage at Delta Beach on Lake Manitoba, playing cards, swimming and building bonfires. She was also active in the Junior League of Winnipeg for many years. In the fall of 1970, Lizanne, who had always been keenly interested in medicine, enrolled in the nursing course at Red River College. She graduated in 1972 with her diploma in nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at the Children's Clinic at the Health Sciences Centre until 1985. One of Lizanne's consuming interests was supporting her husband in his three years of service as a Member of Parliament in Ottawa and 15 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. In 1985, Lizanne and Bud moved to Ottawa following his appointment to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. They lived there until 1995 and then moved to Calgary, where Bud took up a consulting assignment with Telus. They returned to Winnipeg in 1997, where Bud pursued consulting activities for CanWest Global and other telecommunications organizations. All her life, Lizanne's passionate interests were movies, good books, crosswords and conversation, including political debate with friends. She was an excellent dancer. In the 1960s, however, her zeal was somewhat tempered by a knee injury sustained during an overly-enthusiastic performance of the limbo on a slippery dining room floor. From then on, she preferred talking about her dance moves to executing them. Lizanne's greatest friends were Linda Tallin and Elaine Finnbogason, both of whom were godmothers to her daughter. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at St. George's Anglican Church, 168 Wilton Street, at Grosvenor Avenue. Cremation has already taken place. A private family interment will occur on Monday, August 9, 2010. The family would like to extend special thanks to Home Instead, nurses Cindy, Rozwell and staff at Charleswood Care Centre, and Dr. Macek, nurse Sharon and staff at 5 North, Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lizanne's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
