Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHEODORA (DORA) MAE (TWELTRIDGE) LUCKHURST November 6, 1926 - August 3, 2010 On August 3, 2010, we lost our vibrant, fun-loving, and enthusiastic wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Our darling Dora was felled suddenly by a massive stroke. Although her passing was unexpected, we had some warning that Dora would do things her way in death as in life. In 2004, she wrote a resume of her life and said, I do not intend to go to the grave gracefully, but to slide sideways into it! And just like the Dora we knew and continue to love, she did just that. Dora had a wonderful life. Paraphrasing her words, she had a great husband, three wonderful, happily married children, eight super special grandchildren, a gorgeous great-grandson, a devoted sister, two brothers-in-law and a host of other family and friends. Sadly, she was predeceased by her sister Lloyne Morgan and her grandson Dominic Luckhurst-Cartier. Dora spent many years involved in her community. She worked and volunteered at the Neighbourhood Services Centre, the Junior League, and served as a board member and fundraiser for the Manitoba Theatre Centre. She was also a fundraising consultant and Development Officer for the Health Sciences Centre Research Foundation. We cannot count the number of family parties and celebrations over the years inspired by Dora's fabulous ability to throw an awesome party at the drop of a hat, but they were all marked by her vivacious spirit and adept skills as a host. Dora was also a fantastic skier, ferocious tennis player and loved the family cottage which she and her husband Bert built on St. Helena Island at Lake of the Woods some 30 years ago. She loved her expansive gardens and planted and nurtured countless white pines on the island. She and Bert also enjoyed many cold winters and warm parties in their boxcar ski cabin near Mt. Agassiz Ski Resort. As Bert's health deteriorated over the last few years, Dora was his loving and devoted caregiver, spending many hours daily with Bert all the while emailing her myriad of family and friends and getting her exercise at the Reh-fit Centre. Dora is survived by Bert, her husband of 62 years, together with her children Laurie Allen (Michel Monnin), Pam (Dennis Martin) and Neil (Sylvie Cartier), and her grandchildren Julia (Scott), Leah and Lewis, Eric, Patrick, Jean-Philippe and Daniel, and great-grandson Cole, her sister Fran (Gordon Lee), brothers-in-law Jack Morgan and Bill Luckhurst, plus many nieces and nephews and extended family. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations in memory of Dora may be made to Manitoba Theatre Centre Endowment Fund, 174 Market St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0P9 or Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 256 Smith St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1K1. Visitation Sunday, August 8, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home. Funeral service Monday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Private interment at a later date.
