ELEANOR MCEWEN Eleanor McEwen, a long-time resident of Red Lake and widow of the late John Lusted (Jack) McEwen, died peacefully July 28, 2010 at Northwood Lodge in Red Lake in her 98th year. Born in Winnipeg, Eleanor attended Daniel McIntyre High School and University of Manitoba there; a lifelong music lover, she sang with the Winnipeg Symphony before marrying Jack and moving to Red Lake in 1937. In Red Lake, she was active in the Red Lake United Church Women's Association and sang in the choir and in many of the musical performances put on by the choir in the 1950s. Eleanor had worked in the Red Lake doctors' office and the high school, and was still remembered by many residents who were students during the 1960s and 1970s. A wry highlight of that era was her participation in the protest against the banning of studded tires! She was an enthusiastic gardener from her early days in Red Lake until well into her later years. She loved picnicking at the Red Lake Kinsmen Beach with her children when they were young, and the beach remained a favourite spot all her life, for swimming as long as able to, then walking on the sand with her friends. She is survived by her children John (Anne), Rosemary (Hugh), Tom (Yvonne), and Stuart (Gerlinde); her grandchildren Robert (Renae), Carolyn (Joe), Cheryl, and Laureen (Jamie); and her great-grandchildren Kristen, Breanna, and Shannon. Cremation and burial took place on July 31. Eleanor's family wishes to thank the staff of Northwood for their care over the last few years.
