PAULINE ZINMAN (SHELL) On July 28, 2010, our much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital at the age of 97 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Sam, in 2002. She was also predeceased by her parents, Chana and David Shell, and her brothers, Hy and Ben Shell. She is survived by her children Elaine and Bill Bebchuk, Bonnie and Michael Helper, Ted and Ann Zinman; her 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bill Shell (Ruth), her sisters-in-law, Cal Shell, Rose Slayen and Lil Satanoff; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born in Uman, Russia on December 12, 1912 and immigrated to Canada in 1924. Pauline started Grade 1 as an 11 year old not knowing a word of English and graduated 11 years later as a registered nurse. Mom was very involved in the community. She was one of the founding members of the Herzlia Adas Yeshuran Synagogue and president of the sisterhood. She was active for many years in Hadassah Wizo and was a long time volunteer for both Pregnancy Distress and the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Association. She was a very social person and enjoyed a wide circle of friends playing and teaching bridge and mah jong. Knitting for her family was a favourite pastime. Mom loved baking and spent many hours in her kitchen. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her potato knishes, her komish and her moon' cookies. She spent over 40 happy summers in Gimli with dad tending her garden, having wonderful family time with her brothers and their families, fishing and playing mah jong. Funeral services were held at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Friday, July 30, 2010. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Special thanks to the staff of the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence and to Dr. Jack Rusen for their care and attention. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pauline's memory may be made to the Pauline and Sam Zinman Fund at the Winnipeg Jewish Foundation or to the Jewish National Fund.
