MYCHAILO ROMANIUK It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Mychailo Romaniuk on August 9, 2010. Mychailo was predeceased by his wife Anna in 1997. He is survived by his children, Zenon (Jane), Olga Smilinski (Dan), Myron; as well as his grandchildren, Marika, Alexander and Steven. He will be missed by everyone including the family dog, Bronco. Mychailo was born in the village Jaseniw, Brody, Western Ukraine on October 31, 1923. After finishing school, he apprenticed as a carpenter and plied his trade until the Second World War. In 1943, he joined the Ukrainian army to fight for the independence of his homeland, Ukraine. After the war, he settled in England where he met his future wife, Anna Luciw. In June 1949 they married. Both Anna and Mychailo worked in the cotton industry while living in England. In 1951 their first child, Zenon, was born in Halifax, England. While in England, Mychailo and Anna were quite active in numerous Ukrainian organizations. In 1952 they immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg where Mychailo started plying his trade as a carpenter. Shortly thereafter, he built the first family home. In 1955, their first daughter, Olga was born and then in 1960, Myron was born. In 1966, Mychailo started working as a construction foreman for John Miller and Sons Contractors. Over the years he was involved in numerous prominent construction projects such as Holy Rosary Church and the original Animal Rescue Shelter. He built another family home in 1971 as well as homes for all his children. He also found time to build three cottages in his spare time. He wasn't just a carpenter, but a craftsman. He left many legacies in his wake with his construction skills. He made us all very proud. Mychailo had a strong passion for singing. His deep bass voice could be heard resonating from numerous choirs such as O. Koshetz Choir, the Millennium Choir, as well as numerous church choirs. He had been an active member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, as well as past president of the committee there. He was also a member of the Congress of Ukrainian Canadians and Oseredok. Mychailo made his own wine before kits were even invented and was known to give a pretty mean haircut. Friends frequently popped by to get a haircut and share a glass of wine or two. Every weekend, Mychailo and his wife could be found working and relaxing at the family cottage in Belair. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren. He never forgot to stress the importance of working hard and obtaining a quality education. Mychailo was a very caring and unselfish person. He gave his time freely and would offer help to anyone in need. He went far beyond what a normal parent's responsibilities would be for his family. We would like to thank the attendants at Seven Oaks Hospital, Misericordia Health Centre and especially Holy Family Home for their support, kindness and patience. Prayers will be sung 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 12 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 13, also at the Cathedral with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mychailo may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba, or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
