Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARJORIE GRACE DANCE 1915 - 2010 At the end of a long and productive life, Marjorie passed away peacefully at the Maples Personal Care Home on Monday, August 9, 2010. Marjorie was born in Melita, Manitoba on June 6, 1915, the youngest of four children. With parents Charles and Hannah, the family moved to Norwood in 1922. Marjorie (or Marge, as many knew her) was predeceased by her two sisters: Katherine in 1962 and Dorothy in 1985, her brother Bill in 1986, and her nephew Bill in 2008. She is survived by her nephew's children: Leila, Twila, Corey and their mother, Patricia Dance. She will be missed by her cousin Peter Smith (Toronto) and her godchild Heather Baker (Kincardine). Heather and other children of Marge's close friends will remember with fondness their Auntie Marge. Marge was a dedicated educator. Upon graduation from Normal School in 1933 she taught in rural schools for eight years: Inglis, Westbourne, Portage la Prairie and Benito. After teaching at Tuxedo School from 1941 to 1947, she began her lengthy career with the Winnipeg School Division. She held positions with the following schools: George V (1947 to 1953), Isaac Brock, Machray, Grant Park, Luxton, Dufferin (as Principal from 1962 to 1971) and, lastly, George V (as Principal from 1971 to 1976). Teaching was her vocation but she was passionate about both the education and the well-being of her pupils. During her lengthy teaching career she mentored many students, some of whom remained in touch with her to the present time. Marjorie was actively involved in a number of organizations, two being the Manitoba Teachers' Exchange Club and the Retired Women Teachers' Association of Manitoba. She served terms as president of both organizations. She particularly enjoyed some years working as an Exchange Teacher in Scotland, England, Australia and New Zealand. Marge was an intrepid world traveller and was fond of saying that she visited 85 countries and every continent, including Antarctica . She maintained a voluminous correspondence with friends and relatives near and far. Marjorie was a life-time member of St. Philip's Anglican Church, Norwood. In her usual whole-hearted fashion she supported the ministry of her church with her tithe, time and talents. WELL DONE, THOU GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip's Anglican Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 20. The presiding priest will be the Rev. Linda Parsons. The church is wheelchair accessible, entrance at the rear of building. During her year-long stay at the Maples Personal Care Home, Marge appreciated the excellent care of many devoted nurses, aides and other staff members. She was also truly grateful for the visits of many friends. She frequently expressed a million thanks to all who assisted in her transition from Fred Douglas Place to The Maples. In lieu of flowers, it was Marjorie's wish that memorial donations be made to St. Philips Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 1Z7; the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7; or a charity of your choice. As a young boy I only knew Ms Dance as Principal at George V School. However, my Mom (Roberta Bruce-Hryniuk) had maintained a friendship with her and after her appearance at my Mom's funeral - I got to her know her as an adult. On annual visits, we'd have lunch at her apartment or restaurant. I visited Ms Dance most recently on July 1st during a recent visit to Winnipeg. As always, it was a pleasure to spend time with this interesting and engaging person. She was an excellent model for how to live a very full and rich life! - Posted by: Dean Gregory (Family) on: Aug 11, 2010
