KENNETH H. APPLETON June 23, 1919 July 22, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Ken on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 91 years in Winnipeg. Ken will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, John and Peter. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen of 56 years of marriage, his parents Robert and Bessie (Mercer), his brothers Les and Doug, and his sisters Violet and Edna. Ken was born in Widnes-Liverpool, England on June 23, 1919. He started his career with Spence Chemical Co. working in the accounting dept. He was involved with Air Traffic Control-Radar Operations, and later received his wings as an RAF Pilot, and in 1945 completed training as an RAF Flight Engineer. Ken joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1956 in Winnipeg with a special interest in the emerging technology of television broadcasting. Ken enjoyed piloting airplanes and navigating the Manitoba landscape as a member of the Winnipeg Flying Club. In 1981 after 25 years of service with the CBC Ken retired and then enthusiastically spent the next 20 years with the continuing education programs at the University of Winnipeg.
