MADELINE ELIZABETH GARRETT (nee CAUGHEY) On Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Oakview Place. Madeline was born at Ashby Magna, Leicester, England on November 3, 1917. She came to Canada with her mother Madeline May in 1924, and spent her childhood in Winnipeg. After high school she took a secretarial course, then entered Grace Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1940. After graduation Madeline moved to Portland, OR, where she worked as R.N. Madeline met Russ at St. Margaret's Anglican Church through the Youth Group, and during the war they corresponded, becoming engaged on April 2, 1943. At the end of the war both returned to Winnipeg and were married at St. Margaret's on October 25, 1945. They celebrated fifty-nine years of marriage. In the early fifties, in the midst of raising her family, Madeline returned to nursing at the Grace Hospital nursery. When Madeline was in the nursery, every baby was bundled precisely. She continued to work for thirty-two years until her retirement. Madeline had many passions: her family, her faith, her dogs, excellence in nursing, and the cottage at Victoria Beach. She would do anything for her family. When her sister Doreen moved back to Winnipeg, Madeline played a significant role in Mark and Tracy's childhood. She took great pride in her home and enjoyed every minute she spent at the cottage. For many years Madeline and Russ enjoyed travel and trailering across Canada and the United States, especially the Oregon Coast. One of her most exciting trips was her first flight back to England in 1975 to meet her many relatives there. Madeline is survived by daughters, Doreen (Bob) Pattie of Winnipeg, and Audrey (Gordon) Simpson of Miami, MB; grandchildren Audrey and John Pattie (fiancé Shyla Waldman), Carly (Daniel) Préjet, Linda (David) Orchard, and Bradley Simpson; great-grandchildren Michel and Ella Préjet, Lila Orchard; nieces and nephews, Mark Strople, Tracy Christie, Diane Carter, David Garrett and families, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families in England. Madeline was predeceased by her husband Russell William Garrett, by her siblings Doreen in Winnipeg, Doris, Gladys, and William in England; also her brothers-in-law Jack Strople and Leslie Garrett and her sister-in-law Dorothy Garrett. Madeline was a loving wife, mother, and grammie. We will remember her as a strong, determined woman and the memory of her love for her husband and family will always be treasured. The memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Anglican Church (Woodhaven) located at 2700 Portage Avenue with the Rev. Ian Mills officiating. Many thanks to the staff of Oakview Place, and Doctor Moran De Muller for their care and concern for Madeline and the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Andrew's Anglican Church Building Fund, 2700 Portage Ave., Winnipeg R3J 0R1; Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg R3J 929; Winnipeg Humane Society. 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg R3T 0R3.
